SUMMARY: As a collaborative member of Special Education team, the interpreter will serve as the communication link between deaf and hearing individuals in school settings.  This may include translating spoken language into a signed system silently mouthing verbal messages, or using cued speech, in order to make communication as clear as possible for the students.

Job Responsibility Descriptions
  1. Facilitates all communication in the classroom with the student by translating the spoken language into a signed system silently mouthing verbal messages or using cued speech in order to make communication as clear as possible for students.
  1. Provides interpretation for school programs and meetings as needed.
  1. Adapts signing level to communication
  1. Under the direction of a certified teacher, provides tutoring services to reinforce concepts and class content.
  1. Ensures appropriate logistics (e.g., lighting, seating).
  1. Provides clear and appropriate information for substitute interpreters.
  1. Maintains record of continuing education activities.
  1. Educates others regarding the implications of hearing loss.
  1. Attends meetings or provides information to the team about concerns related to a student’s needs.
  1. Perform other duties as assigned.
 
EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:
  • Passing score on Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA)            
  • Passing score on EIPA – Written test
  • Associates Degree in educational interpreting or related field
  • 6 hours of continuing education required every 5 years
 LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS or CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Criminal background check required for hire
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license
  • CDE authorization:  Educational Interpreter

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT OPERATING KNOWLEDGE:
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers and peripherals.
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with typical office equipment, such as telephones, copier, fax machine, E-mail, 10 key calculator, etc.
Operating knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office to include Word and Excel
