The job of Counselor includes providing support to students in the instructional process with specific responsibility for providing course curriculum, information and recommendations to students and parents; and assisting in the development of goals and plans for achievement.  School counselors are responsible to implement a comprehensive school counseling program based on district goals and objectives. They will assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of a school’s counseling and guidance program to meet the individual and diverse needs of all students through individual planning, guidance curriculum, and responsive services.

FUNCTIONS

  • Coordinates and collaborates with teachers and other personnel, resource specialists and/or community (e.g. Courts, child protective services, etc.) for the purpose of providing/receiving requested information and/or making recommendations.
  • Counsels students, parents, and guardians to enhance student success in school.
  • Develops a variety of programs for providing information to assist students in difficult situations and successful school transitions.
  • Monitors students' progress for the purpose of identifying issues and taking appropriate action for increasing student success.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops and seminars as assigned for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of
    the work unit.
  • Prepares a wide variety of materials (e.g. quantity reports, student activities, correspondence, audits, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
  • Presents information (e.g. budget overviews, accounting processes, distribution formulas, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information, gaining feedback and ensuring adherence to established internal controls.
  • Schedules student classes for the purpose of securing appropriate placement and meeting school, district, and/or State requirements.
  • Supervises assigned programs (e.g. peer counseling, special education, ESL, etc.) to monitor performance, provide for professional growth and achieve overall curriculum implementation.
  • Performs essential duties and responsibilities efficiently, accurately and safely, with or without reasonable accommodation, and without posing a threat of harm to self or others.  
  • Attendance:  Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined in the employer’s sole discretion.  
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or required.
QUALIFICATIONS   
1.  Professional Utah Educators Counselor license/endorsement, or;
2.   Professional Utah Educators license in School Social Work, or:
      a.   State of Utah Social Work License- either a CSW or LCSW, and;
      bAs an applicant, you agree that if you are the successful candidate, you will obtain the State of Utah Educators License in Social Work within two years of date of employment.
3.  Professional communication skills including, but not limited to:  excellent written and verbal communications skills; confident, articulate and professional speaking abilities; and emphatic listening and persuasive speaking skills.


Work Environment:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work is performed in an office setting. This position may require travel, including driving, throughout the District and other locations for business-related purposes. General lifting in an office environment.
