Position Title: History Teacher

Location: Southampton County Public Schools

Reports To: Principal

Job Summary: The History Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging and comprehensive instruction in history, covering various periods and regions, including American history, world history, and social studies. This role involves developing lesson plans, assessing student understanding, and creating a classroom environment that fosters critical thinking and historical inquiry.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Instructional Planning and Delivery:

  • Develop and implement a thorough curriculum in history that aligns with state and national standards.
  • Provide instruction in various historical periods, including American history, world history, and social studies.
  • Utilize a range of teaching methods, including lectures, discussions, multimedia resources, and hands-on activities to enhance learning and student engagement.
  • Student Engagement and Assessment:

    • Create an inclusive and dynamic classroom environment that encourages student participation and interest in history.
    • Assess and evaluate student performance through assignments, tests, essays, projects, and presentations.
    • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students to support their academic progress and address areas for improvement.
  • Curriculum Development and Professional Development:

    • Develop and update instructional materials, lesson plans, and resources to improve the history curriculum.
    • Stay current with advancements in history education and best practices through professional development opportunities.
    • Incorporate new trends, technologies, and innovative teaching strategies into the classroom.
  • Classroom Management:

    • Maintain an orderly and respectful classroom environment that supports effective teaching and learning.
    • Implement and enforce classroom rules and procedures to ensure a productive and safe learning environment.
    • Address and manage any behavioral issues or disruptions fairly and consistently.
  • Historical Skill Development:

    • Promote and support students' development of critical thinking, analytical skills, and historical inquiry.
    • Encourage students to explore historical events and contexts through research, discussion, and analysis.
    • Provide additional support and resources for students who need help with historical concepts and skills.
  • Parent and Community Engagement:

    • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, achievements, and areas for improvement.
    • Participate in parent-teacher conferences, school meetings, and other events to build strong relationships with families.
    • Engage with the community to support students' learning experiences and promote historical literacy.
  • Administrative Tasks:

    • Maintain accurate records of student grades, attendance, and other necessary documentation.
    • Prepare and submit reports, lesson plans, and other required paperwork in a timely manner.
    • Manage classroom supplies and resources, ensuring a well-organized and effective learning environment.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in History, Education, or a related field.
    • Valid state teaching certification in History or secondary education.
    • Previous experience teaching history preferred.
    • Strong knowledge of historical concepts, events, and methodologies.
    • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work effectively with students, colleagues, and parents.
    • Proficiency in using educational technology and instructional resources.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to stand, sit, and move around for extended periods.
    • Capacity to lift and carry up to 25 pounds of educational materials.
    • Ability to perform tasks involving manual labor, such as setting up classroom activities.

    Work Environment:

    • Work is performed in a classroom setting.
    • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for school events and activities.
