Personal Care Assistant (PCA)

Position Purpose

Full time Personal Care Assistant at Halifax Elementary School, includes benefits, hourly rate as per HESPA contract.  This position increases the quality of education by assisting one particular student with behavioral, medical and or physical needs. This position is not responsible for the design, direction or evaluation of the teaching/learning process.  Regular attendance is required to fulfill the duties of this position.

Essential Job Functions

-  Assists student with special needs in all aspects of classroom activities.

-  Assist student with physical or mental disabilities with activities of daily living for the purpose of maximizing their ability to participate in school or learning activities.

-  Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs.

- Assist with all aspects of toileting, which may include transfers to and from the toilet, changing diapers or pull-ups.

- Assist student on and off the bus.

-Facilitate personal care services as needed to assist student with daily living activities needed for comfort and well-being as indicated on student's Individual Education Program.

- Assist student with general hygiene as necessary.

- Collect daily data and document progress notes in a prescribed format for each session with student.

- Follow and reinforce the student's behavior plan as instructed by the student's Individual Education Program.  

-Accompany the student and assist the teacher during emergency drills.

-  Assist student on school approved field trips

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

-  Works in standard office and school building environments.

-  Ability to work outdoors during outdoor student activities.

Qualifications Profile

-  High School diploma

- Training In Safe Crisis Intervention preferred

- CPR/First Aid preferred

- Experience working with children with special needs preferred

- Strong interpersonal skills

- Ability to work with minimal supervision
