Compensation & Benefits

  • School Bus Driver Rate: $25.75 per hour
  • Van Driver Rate: $19.71 per hour Get paid as a Van Driver while completing CDL training and obtaining School Bus Driver Certification – comprehensive training provided!

Position Summary

The School Bus Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a school bus or van, ensuring students are transported to and from school and school-sponsored events in accordance with all laws, district policies, and established safety standards. The driver interacts courteously with students, parents, and staff, and consistently models professionalism, patience, and care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain required licensing for school bus operation in Pennsylvania.
  • Operate district vehicles along assigned routes and schedules safely and responsibly.
  • Comply with all local, state, and federal transportation laws and regulations.
  • Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections; report safety or mechanical concerns immediately.
  • Load and unload students only at district-approved stops; ensure student safety during boarding and exiting.
  • Maintain discipline and promote safe, respectful student behavior.
  • Keep the vehicle clean and organized; remove debris and sweep floors daily.
  • Accurately complete required documentation (route sheets, time sheets, reports, etc.).
  • Report all accidents, discipline incidents, or vehicle issues promptly to the Transportation Director or designee.
  • Attend safety meetings, required training sessions, and in-service programs.
  • Refuel and maintain vehicle windows and mirrors for safe operation.
  • Monitor routes for hazards and promptly report unsafe conditions.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and district staff.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Transportation Director or designee.

Required Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver's License; CDL preferred.
  • Valid Pennsylvania School Bus Driver Certificate (training provided for qualified candidates).
  • Must pass pre-employment physical and drug screening.
  • Familiarity with local roadways and professional driving procedures preferred.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to perform light lifting up to 20 lbs.; frequent lifting/carrying up to 10 lbs.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods and perform required vehicle inspections (bending, reaching, etc.).

Work Environment

  • Most duties performed inside the bus or van; some outdoor exposure during loading/unloading and inspections.
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions as required by route and schedule.

Other Requirements

  • Reliable attendance and punctuality are essential.

  • Commitment to student safety, professionalism, and teamwork.

  • Must maintain all required clearances, pass pre-employment drug screening, and provide proof of negative TB test.
