Speech Language Pathologist Job Description

Job Summary: Assesses and identifies students with communication disorders which adversely affect their educational progress; develops and provides direct and indirect services within the student's educational setting, based on established IEP goals and objectives.

Supervisor: Principal

Qualifications: Professional Educator License with SLP (teaching) or SLPN (non-teaching) endorsement

Duties and Responsibilities

Assessment

  1. Demonstrates and applies knowledge of the screening/referral/evaluation/re-evaluation process
  2. Demonstrates current knowledge of formal and informal assessment procedures
  3. Selects appropriate assessment instruments based on the student needs
  4. Interprets assessment information accurately and present findings/recommendations in a timely manner that can be understood by parents and staff and which are appropriate to student needs
  5. Completes observations, evaluations, and re-evaluations of students as needed; write effective coordinating reports
  6. Gathers and maintains data to determine present level of performance and progress toward goals
  7. Demonstrates an awareness, understanding, and knowledge of the variety of physical, emotional, and cognitive conditions which may contribute to communication and swallowing/feeding disorders

 

Instruction/Therapy/Counseling

 

  1. Develops, implements, and revises specific goals and objectives appropriate for student growth and development
  2. Demonstrates appropriate preparation through selection and/or adaptation of materials, techniques, and methods to meet individual student needs
  3. Provides therapy using a variety of intervention and service delivery models to meet communication and feeding/swallowing needs of individual students
  4. When appropriate, assesses and supports student needs through the use of assistive technology
  5. Organizes time, space, materials, and equipment for therapy
  6. Demonstrates effective individual and group behavior management techniques
  7. Uses District resources to assist with the development and monitoring of specialized interventions including assistive technology, autism, and feeding skills

Communication

  1. Provides parents with information related to student’s speech-language needs and suggestions for activities to promote development and generalization of skills
  2. Communicates and interact positively and effectively with students, parents, and school personnel
  3. Promotes positive family, school, and community relationships
  4. Collaborates with building and classroom staff to identify students and provide strategies to meet needs
  5. Consults with outside professional agencies/service providers for coordination of therapeutic interventions and evaluations, when appropriate

Management

  1. Facilitates and coordinates scheduling with applicable school personnel
  2. Prepares for and attend required meetings and conferences
  3. Follows proper procedures and completes all necessary special education forms as it relates to speech and language pathology in order to meet compliance with federal, state, and local guidelines
  4. Participates as a member of the school and district teams in improving service delivery

  1. Understands and follows policies and procedures of the District
  2. Demonstrates knowledge of special education legislation and acts in accordance with these mandates
  3. Demonstrates knowledge in field of speech language pathology including current issues and trends
  4. Demonstrates professionalism (flexible, adaptable, uses good judgement, acts appropriately and ethically, child centered, treats others with respect and dignity)
  5. Reflects on professional practice and responds professionally to feedback
  6. Participates in professional growth activities
