Mission Statement
The core philosophy and underlying purpose of Mater Academy East Charter School is reflected in the multi-age learning environment that allows students to learn and progress at their own pace. Students’ success on the standardized tests demonstrates that the charter school continues to address the individual needs of all its students. This is a challenging task considering that 91% of the students are classified as ESOL, and 96% of the students participated in the free/reduced lunch program. Mater Academy East has developed a curriculum that incorporates traditional teaching (e.g., Sunshine State Standards, Competency-Based Curriculum) with innovative programs (e.g., America Reads, Intensive Care Tutorial, FCAT After-School Tutorial, Voyager Passport) and effective reading strategies (CRISS, Independent Reading, Reciprocal Teaching) in a nurturing environment with small class sizes and paraprofessionals for each grade level. Parents participate in the educational process through parental contracts and workshops offered to assist parents with homework and test preparation skills. Mater Academy East Charter School currently offers a multi-age learning environment with a proven track record in reaching low-income, predominantly ESOL students. Mater Academy was one of the first charter schools in Miami-Dade County, and has achieved higher reading and mathematics scores than the district average on various editions of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test.
