BASIC FUNCTION The School Bus Driver is a member of the Transportation Department who assists in the transporting of children to and from school, as well as related activities, in a prompt and safe manner.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Bus Driver shall: 1. Be directly responsible to the Transportation Director or his designee for job assignments 2. Not allow any unauthorized person(s) rider ship privileges 3. Follow pre-trip procedures using adopted reports and turn in completed reports as prescribed 4. Follow assigned routes as written. 5. Exercise student management through correct use of communication and discipline procedures and notify transportation and school officials when unable to resolve issues. 6. Obey all traffic laws as they relate to school bus transportation 7. Delegate appropriate tasks to the School Bus Monitor 8. Display tact, courtesy and maintain a wholesome relationship with students, parents, teachers, fellow employees and administrator 9. Be able to maintain confidentiality in regard to student, parent, school and transportation relationships 10. Maintain acceptable punctuality and attendance 11. Cooperate with administrative staff and accept constructive criticism well 12. Assist Bus Monitor in loading, unloading and properly securing passengers who require restraint systems, using safe and responsible procedures. 13. Any motor vehicle violations must be reported to the supervisor within 24 hours. 14. Become familiar with accident reporting procedures as stated in the Employee Handbook. 15. Bus drivers who violate traffic rules and regulations are responsible for payment of citations issued. 16. Assist Bus Monitor in securing seatbelts, harnesses or car seats when loading at group sites or schools. Drivers, if you have a change in your route please let the route coordinator know, also, if you have to change routes during the day let the office know. 17. Do not permit any child to disembark from the bus unless a 16 year or older responsible party is there to assist that child into the home unless the department has written authorization 18. Check the bus after each student drop and at the end of each and every run for items or children left on the bus. 19. Operate the bus two-way radio correctly and according to FCC regulations and Transportation Department policy. 20. Keep the bus clean and orderly with daily pick up and sweeping, flip at least 5 seats once a month and check for any trash. 21. Thoroughly clean the interior of the bus on a weekly basis and in inclement weather, rinse the windshield and rear window for visibility. 22. Maintain communication with parents of students by weekly phone calls. 23. Do not allow any unauthorized person(s) on the school bus. 24. Drivers must be at the vehicle at their scheduled pre-trip time for a radio check. 25. Become familiar with all policies and procedures in the Transportation handbook 26. Perform all other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation or his designee.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIFIC SKILLS FOR THIS POSITION: 1. Must have at least three years of previous successful, accident free, driving experience, or be trained by the Hammond Transportation Department 2. Must maintain valid current Indiana State Certification yellow card 3. Must maintain a valid current Inter-State CDL license and current State and Federal DOT physical with updated negative TB test 4. Must adhere to drug and alcohol policy 5. The ability to establish and maintain effective relationship with pupils, parents and professional staff persons 6. The ability and commitment to follow proper lines of authority. 7. Must be able to lift at least 30lbs 8. Must pass the State Driver Performance Standards as prescribed by State Law 9. Must be able to drag at least 125lbs 10. Must be able to exit the bus through the emergency exit door 11. Have a pleasant warm personality 12. Be of Good health, character and reputation 13. The interest and ability to work with children who have special needs 14. Maintain, read and understand route sheets including time changes 15. Must be team minded in work habits 16. Attend all required in-service training, safety meetings and any other required meetings and/or training sessions 17. The physical ability to operate all controls and devices associated with the bus 18. including the ability to evacuate the physically handicapped students from the vehicle in emergency situations

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Candidate should be physically capable of successfully performing the essential functions of the position.
