Academy for Urban School Leadership (AUSL) creates schools of excellence by developing highly effective teachers and transforming educational outcomes for students in the lowest performing schools. AUSL currently manages 31 CPS neighborhood turnaround schools that are predominately located on the Westside and Southside of Chicago. All school staff at an AUSL turnaround schools are employees of CPS. Our turnaround schools are seeking full-time Teacher Assistants who are interested in becoming members of a special support team. This support team will work together as guardians of the public spaces of the school and assist with instruction and developing a positive school climate. Under the direction of the principal, these individuals will interact with children during the school day, explaining and clarifying the high expectations for positive student behavior, and helping each student to understand how our schools "work”. This important work will require collaborative persons who are dedicated to building an environment conducive to teaching and learning. This position will be opened for a 39.6 week school year (208 days including 10 paid vacation days). Salary and compensation will be paid according to the Chicago Teacher Union (CTU) collective bargaining agreement.
- Assists students in understanding and completing classroom assignments
- Support teachers in organizing classroom and preparing educational materials
- Greet and directs students and visitors to appropriate areas of the school
- Assist in developing a positive, orderly learning environment which engages students and maximizes on-task behavior
- Develop positive rapport with school staff and students to contribute to working conditions conducive to building a professional learning community.
- Stimulate reflection by guiding students to explore areas of risk, discomfort and opportunity.
- Participate in individual and group professional development activities.
- Great written and verbal communication skills, time management and organization skills, and exceptional customer service.
- Exercise good judgment when interacting with students, parents, and school staff.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and Microsoft Outlook
- Participate in a mandatory summer professional development
- High school diploma (or G.E.D. equivalent)
- Valid NCLB paraprofessional license from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). May be applied for and obtained after the successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of college credit at a college or university.
- Reside within the city of Chicago
- Successfully complete pre-employment drug and alcohol screening with background check
- Able to lift up to 20 pounds, and walk/stand to a significant degree (light work)
