Description

SENSE Charter School is a community school created with the purpose of serving the students and families living on the Southeast side of Indianapolis. Authorized by the Mayor’s Office, SENSE Charter School received its third 7-year renewal for the 2018-2024 school years.

SENSE Charter School is the first certified Trauma Informed School in the state of Indiana as designated by Starr Global. Teachers and staff have been trained to recognize and respond to students impacted by traumatic stress. In addition, students are provided with clear expectation and communications strategies to guide them through stressful situations such as; mediation, use of calm down spaces, brain breaks, and wrap-around supports. The goal is to not only provide tools to cope with extreme situations, but to create an underlying culture of respect, support, and resilience. Teachers joining the SENSE team will be trained in trauma informed practices and be paired with a mentor teacher to help support them with the implementation and structures of working in a trauma informed school.
