Bus Attendant / Aide
General Description:
To assist the bus driver in ensuring the safe, orderly, and efficient transportation of district students, including those in General Education and Exceptional Student Services (ESS), to and from school and designated stops. The bus attendant must be punctual, attentive, and vigilant while monitoring students, supporting their needs, and helping maintain safety along the assigned route.
Qualifications
- Must have a High School diploma.
- Must possess/maintain a valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card (upon employment).
- Background clearance (upon employment).
- Must be able to demonstrate proficient writing skills.
- Must be able to verbally communicate with students.
Duties and Responsibilities
- The bus attendant is responsible for student safety while they are boarding, riding and unloading the school bus. You need to alert and ensure all students are following the safety rules of the bus and reduce distractions for the bus driver.
- Respond to in a customer friendly manner to the student's questions, requests and concerns.
- Assist the driver with students boarding and departure from the bus.
- Encourage students to be independent and responsible as much as possible.
- Assist any student, as needed, to maneuver the stairwell when they get off the school bus.
- Work as a team with the bus driver to load and unload students in wheelchairs from the lift. Make sure the student is securely tied down.
- When securing the wheelchair in the back of the bus, be sure to observe other students on the bus.
- Ask Work with the bus driver to understand how to secure students in safety restraints systems.
- Help keep your bus clean by washing windows, mopping, dusting and sweeping. If student has an accident please make sure to wear proper protection and use sterilizing cleaners.
- Do not manage students by using fear, threats or make unreasonable demands. If a student is misbehaving report it to the bus driver.
- Maintain records of student's behavior on the bus.
- Be alert and redirect students when needed.
- Participate in training on how to evacuate students from the bus.
- Participate in training on how to manually work the wheelchair lift.
- Bus attendants may be asked to walk with students to the office or classroom. The bus attendant should not leave the bus unless the driver instructs them to.
- No drinking or eating with students on the bus.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee may be required to push, pull, or lift up to 50 pounds in various directions.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The employee frequently works in outside weather conditions.

EVALUATION: Performance for this position will be evaluated in accordance with the provision of Board Policy GDO - Evaluation of Support Staff Members.
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Hourly
Terms: Part-time, 183 Day Work Calendar
Compensation Range: Classified Hourly Salary Schedule
