Reports to: Deputy Executive Director, McREL Institute at Region 13

Salary: This is a full-time twelve (12) month position at 232 days with a minimum annual salary range of $89,000 - $108,000. This is a grant-funded position and continued employment is contingent upon grant renewal. 

Job Summary (Primary Purpose): The Coordinator of Research collaborates with Institute’s CEO and leaders to develop a long-term research agenda that demonstrates the impact of the Institute’s current products and programs while guiding the creation of future research-based products and programs. The coordinator also designs research studies that support the Institute’s local and national clients and partners.

The person in this position is a thought leader who

  • designs and leads research and evaluation studies
  • communicates research insights and results to educators in a meaningful way that support the translation of research into practice
  • develops and mentors a team of internal researchers and external consultants,
  • takes ownership and accountability for team and Institute products, services, and outcomes, and
  • develops and executes a long-term strategy for sustaining the research function of the Institute through a variety of internal and external funding mechanisms.
This position will be based in Austin Texas and require some state and national travel.


Required Qualification (Knowledge, Skills & Education/Certificates):
  • Ph.D. in education or a related research field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five (5) + years of relevant work experience.
  • Five (5) + years complex project management experience.
  • Two (2) + years of experience with people management.
  • Two (2) + years leading proposal development.
  • Two (2) + years of relevant business development experience (competitive grant writing, direct sales, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills & Education/Certificates):
  • Two (2) + years as a senior leader in educational research, measurement, or evaluation.
  • Three (3) + years of experience with people management.
  • Three (3) + years leading proposal development.
  • Three (3) + years of relevant business development experience (competitive grant writing, direct sales, etc.).

Knowledge and Skills:
  • Strong oral and written communication skills (including technical writing, small-group facilitation, and presentation skills).
  • Demonstrated expertise with quantitative and/or qualitative methodologies, methods, and associated analyses as well as the ability to determine the appropriate methodology for the questions being asked.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills and ability to help staff problem-solve.
  • Knowledge and understanding of significant issues in education.
  • Deep knowledge of methodologies and methods of inquiry; ability to conceptualize improvements to known methodologies and methods.
  • Ability to apply research or evaluation theory.
  • Deep knowledge of instrument design. Ability to create instruments based on extant ones or create sound instruments.
  • Ability to collect data using various approaches (i.e., focus groups, interviews, surveys).
  • Ability to coach and mentor staff to develop skills and improve outcomes.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.


Major Job Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
  • Serve as a representative of the McREL Institute and ESC Region 13, displaying courtesy, tact, consideration, and discretion in all interactions with other members of the educational community and with the public.
  • Serve as a principal member of the McREL Institute leadership team to provide strategic vision, direction, and leadership in developing and delivering on a research agenda for Institute, identifying funding opportunities, and securing funding to advance research opportunities in a variety of content areas.
  • Design and conduct research studies in collaboration with partners and clients to develop and test potential interventions through small-scale research studies.
  • Build and maintain relationships with local, state and national partners.
  • Lead and direct development, planning, and implementation of strategic direction for research and evaluation endeavors, including developing, planning, and implementing a research agenda.
  • Lead and direct projects by establishing project work plans, timelines, and staffing resources needed to successfully support projects.
  • Direct a client portfolio of projects that provide direct service to clients and build their expertise.
  • Ensure that research projects align with the Institute’s strategy and goals, including providing thought leadership and translating research findings into practical guidance that support better student outcomes.
  • Identify and acquire new business to support the Institute’s research agenda through responses to solicitations and direct outreach to prospective clients and partners.
  • Lead the conceptualization, planning, and writing of proposals and bids for clients. Able to conceptualize customized research designs.
  • Develop and maintain existing and new client relationships.
  • Respond to internal and external requests in a timely matter, including, frequently, during non-traditional business hours.
  • Proactively seeks input from others and fosters cross-team work.
  • Make decisions, perform, and encourage others to act in a manner congruent with organizational goals, strategy, vision, mission, and values.
  • Model and champion Region 13 policies, procedures, and processes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Ensure policies and procedures are followed by the team
  • Supervise assigned staff, including hiring, reviewing performance, and recommending changes as needed
  • Provide mentorship and establish professional growth goals aligned with team and organizational priorities

Budget Responsibilities:
  • Work with the CEO to develop budget for research team
  • Maintain working knowledge of McREL Institute budget
Working Conditions (Physical/Mental Demands & Environmental Factors):
  • Follow policies and procedures
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple competing priorities
  • Indoor office environment with some remote work flexibility
  • Local, state, and national travel required (including overnight and commercial airline travel)
  • Travel for this position is estimated at up to 10%

  • General office equipment, Windows computer and peripherals, audio/visual equipment, and other equipment as requirements change.
