Position Summary:
The Special Education Paraprofessional supports classroom teachers in delivering high-quality instruction and care to students with diverse learning needs. This role promotes each student’s academic growth, personal development, independence, and overall well-being through direct support, supervision, and collaboration.
Essential Functions
Student Support & Supervision
Escort, assist, and/or supervise students during transitions, play periods, lunch, snacks, toileting routines, specialized and inclusive classes, community outings, and other designated times.
Provide support that ensures student safety, dignity, and engagement during all school activities.
Instructional Support
Reinforce skills and concepts introduced by the teacher through small-group or one-on-one instruction.
Assist with large-group activities including drills, reading aloud, and storytelling.
Support test administration as directed by the teacher.
Score objective tests and assignments under teacher guidance and assist with maintaining accurate student records.
Behavioral Support
Assist in implementing behavior intervention plans, including observing, recording, and charting student behavior.
Follow reinforcement schedules and apply approved crisis-prevention or restraint methods only when required and under direct teacher or administrative supervision.
Classroom Operations
Help organize and maintain classroom materials, equipment, and workspaces to create a positive and efficient learning environment.
Serve as a resource for substitute teachers to ensure continuity of support and procedures.
Communicate promptly and professionally with the supervising teacher regarding student concerns, needs, or changes in behavior.
Collaboration & Professional Growth
Participate in professional development, workshops, and in-service trainings as required.
Attend specialized training necessary for implementing students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
Participate in parent conferences when requested and report any parental concerns to the supervising teacher or administrator.
Other Duties
Perform additional responsibilities related to Special Education as assigned by the teacher or administrator.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to effectively perform the essential functions of the position.
Bilingual proficiency in Spanish (required)
Experience:

Experience
Prior experience working with children (required).
Basic computer skills and the ability to use educational technology (required).
Experience supporting teachers and students in a school or educational environment (preferred).
Experience tutoring or providing academic support to young children (preferred).
Education:
60 hours of college credits OR,
Associate’s degree or higher
ISBE Paraprofessional License
Physical Requirements:
Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle
Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body
Light work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree
Working Conditions and Environment:
Work is routinely performed in a typical interior/office environment
Very limited or no exposure to physical risk
