POSITION TITLE: Secondary ELA Teacher
LOCATION: Tomlinson Middle School
REPORTS TO: Building Principal
SALARY: According to the current contract with MEA/NEA

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Westwood Community School District is seeking an innovative, student-focused Secondary ELA Teacher committed to fostering literacy, critical thinking, and digital fluency among Michigan middle school learners. The ideal candidate is equipped to integrate Michigan’s ELA Standards, culturally responsive instruction, and responsible use of digital tools—including artificial intelligence (AI)—to help students thrive academically and socially. This educator will prepare students to be effective communicators, readers, and writers for both the M-STEP and real-world challenges.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in education
- Valid Michigan Teacher Certificate or equivalent (BX) or (BA) endorsement
- Familiarity with the Michigan K-12 ELA Standards and Michigan Assessment of Educational Progress (M-STEP)
- Minimum of 3 years teaching experience within a middle school ELA classroom, preferred
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Duties of this job include, but are not limited to:
- Deliver rigorous, engaging instruction aligned with the Michigan ELA Standards and district pacing guides
- Provides Authentic learning activities for students
- Embraces engaging group work and student collaboration
- Provides weekly lesson plans aligned to state standards and common core aligned to the school's scope and sequence and tied to power standards
- Collaborate with colleagues in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to align curriculum and share instructional strategies
- Executes lessons that reflect collaborative planning from Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)
- Establish clear and measurable objectives for all lessons, units and projects, and communicate those objectives to students
- Knowledge and and/or willingness to incorporate AI tools to enhance collaboration and creativity
- Provides bell to bell instruction
- Provides weekly communication logs to Principal based on conversations with students and parents highlighting successes, accomplishments, concerns
- Collaborate and communicate with staff to meet the educational needs of students
- Create, administer, and grade tests to evaluate student progress
- Establish and enforce rules and procedures which help to maintain order in the classroom
- Observe, evaluate, and prepare reports on the progress of students. Discusses students’ problems and progress with parents and staff
- Maintain timely communication with families and guardians using digital platforms
- Participates and is engaged in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops
- Use formative and summative data-including NWEA and M-STEP results-to inform instruction and intervention
- Observes, enforces and is directed by the policies, procedures, and regulations adopted by the school district, and by the school
- Participates in school and or district specific committees
- Assists with additional duties as assigned by the Principal
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students
- Ability and patience to work interactively with students
- Skill in organization, time management, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to deliver teaching instruction in accordance with improved curriculum and standards
- Effective classroom management strategies rooted in restorative practices
- Excellent skills in verbal and written communication
- Ability to understand the individual needs of each student
- Ability to effectively use Google Classroom and the student information system – MiStar
- Ability to take accurate and timely attendance
- Ability to update grades no later than 2 days after an assignment has been given to students
- Ability to check and respond to email at least 3 times a day - before school, during prep, and after school

- The employee is required to interact with students, staff, parents/guardians and occasionally with the public.
- At times, the employee may be directly responsible for the safety and well-being of students.
