Position Title:  Bilingual Spanish Instructional Aide 
Department:  English Learners
Building:  Highland Park High School
Reports To:  Program Director
Hours:  7.5 hours/day 
Rate:  $22.00/hour

SUMMARY:
Under the direction and supervision of the Program Director, the person in this position is responsible for assisting classroom teachers with instruction of English Language Learners as well as the supervision of the EL Resource Center and other areas of the building. Excellent communication, technological, and organizational skills and a genuine desire to work with students are required. 
A particular focus of this position is to support our newcomers with limited English proficiency in non-bilingual classrooms where English is the language of instruction. Spanish interpretation and translation will be used to ensure students’ access to class content, understanding of class routines, and ability to follow class instructions in order to increase student participation and learning.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Work with bilingual, English-as-a-Second Language, and Dual Language students in classrooms and resource rooms as an instructional assistant.
  • Communicate effectively with classroom teachers and department chair.
  • Assist teachers with classroom management.
  • Aid with attendance, classroom organization, and production of instructional materials.
  • Monitor student behavior and assist with discipline.
  • Assist teachers in classroom instruction.
  • Monitor student work, clarify instructions, edit student compositions, administer exams and supervise classroom and labs.
  • Work individually with students on academic tasks.
  • Edit student writing, help students with homework assignments, assist students with computer use, etc.
  • Provide language translations and support to students who are learning English.
  • Develop and display awareness for course curriculum and lesson objectives.
  • Participate professionally in all-school responsibilities (Building supervision, coaching assignments, club sponsorships, etc.)
  • Actively contribute to a positive school environment.  
  • Other duties as assigned.

     
EDUCATION, SKILLS and/or EXPERIENCE:
  • State Paraprofessional Approval or pass Paraprofessional Test
  • Strong Fluency in Spanish language skills
  • Competency using Google Chrome and Chromebooks

     
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Paraprofessional Certification registered with Lake County ROE.

  • Ability to handle and maintain the confidentiality of employee, student and other sensitive District information.
  • Ability to set goals and establish methods for achieving these goals.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, bend, write, type, speak, and listen.  In addition the employee may occasionally be required to bend, twist, reach and climb.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, peripheral and distant vision.  Ability to work in office environment, sitting, standing, light lifting, filing, operate office machines and computer, communicate with staff and others.  Occasional lifting, otherwise non-demanding office activities. 
The noise level in the work environment ranges from quiet/moderate to loud.  The employee is frequently required to interact with the public and other staff.  The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being and work output of students.
