JOB TITLE
Health Care Coordinator (RN, BSN) School Nurse (Part-Time)

JOB SUMMARY
The School Nurse provides health care for students in ESC programs at the Westwood Learning Center. Duties include maintaining and administering medications; examining students to determine whether a student can remain in school or needs additional medical assistance; maintaining student medical records; administering vision and hearing screenings; and serving as a resource regarding health-related issues of the ALC and preschool programs.

QUALIFICATIONS
Current State of Ohio Board Registered Nurse License required
Bachelor of Science in Nursing required
Current BLS and/or CPR/First Aid certification required
Current Ohio Department of Education School Nurse registration preferred
Experience working with special needs students preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
• Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to school and student health and safety
• Knowledge of the Ohio Operating Standards for the Education of Children with Disabilities
• Knowledge of FERPA and HIPPA
• Knowledge of childhood illnesses and communicable diseases
• Knowledge of community agencies that can support students with disabilities
• Ability to use technology as both a productivity tool and as a method of communication; proficient in computer applications (e.g. Microsoft Office, Google Docs)
• Ability to operate and interpret results from basic medical equipment including but not limited to tympanometer, audiometer, stethoscope, and thermometer
• Ability to assess the health condition of students and apply medical knowledge including the ability to perform CPR
• Ability to maintain accurate student medical records
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
• Ability to maintain confidentiality
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, co-workers, administrators, and public
• Ability to model ethical principles and democratic ideals for students and the community

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Securely maintain and administer student medications with proper physician and parent/guardian authorization; maintain a written record of the administration of medication including dosage, date and time
  • Provides routine and emergency medical care to students including referral for medical treatment within scope of nursing responsibility
  • Evaluates students to determine if a student should be excluded from school due to health concerns
  • Assist administrators in notifying parents when a child has been exposed to a communicable disease
  • Conducts all health screenings (e.g. vision, hearing, and general health) and assists the school in complying with regulations of the Ohio Department of Health

  • Maintain all immunization data, health records, lists of student allergies and other required health forms for students
  • Assists in the prevention and control of disease and parasitic infestations within the program setting
  • Interprets the Toledo/Lucas County Health department’s rules and regulations relating to the control of communicable disease

  • Keeps informed on new health laws, policies, regulations, trends and treatments; Inform the administrator of changing health programs, laws and safety standards
  • Serves as resource person on health-related issues for the staff, administrators, students, and parents
  • Communicates with parents and medical professionals regarding student medical conditions
  • Utilizes and acts as liaison with various health and community agencies on behalf of administrators
  • Maintains adequate inventory of health aids and supplies.
  • Serve as a member of the emergency response team
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
  • Makes phone calls to verify student absences as needed
  • In-service teachers on health issues including medication guidelines, prevention of communicable disease, responsible use of chemicals and cleaning agents as needed
  • Participate in opportunities to improve skills and grow professionally; attend all required meetings and in-services
