Position Title: Bilingual Substitute Teacher
Location: Southampton County Public Schools Academy
Reports To: Principal
Job Summary:
The Bilingual Substitute Teacher is responsible for providing instruction and managing the classroom environment in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. This role includes delivering lessons in both English and the second language, maintaining classroom order, and ensuring a positive and productive learning experience for students. The Bilingual Substitute Teacher supports students in their language development and academic progress.
Key Responsibilities:
Instruction:
- Follow lesson plans provided by the regular classroom teacher to deliver instruction in both English and the second language.
- Utilize instructional materials and resources to engage students in bilingual learning activities.
- Adapt teaching methods and materials to meet the diverse needs of students, including English Language Learners (ELL).
Classroom Management:
- Maintain a safe and orderly classroom environment conducive to learning.
- Implement classroom rules and procedures to ensure appropriate student behavior.
- Address any disciplinary issues in accordance with school policies and procedures.
Student Support:
- Provide assistance to students with their classwork and assignments in both languages.
- Monitor student progress and provide feedback as needed.
- Support students in developing effective study and organizational skills.
Language Development:
- Facilitate language development and proficiency in both English and the second language.
- Support ELL students in their language acquisition and academic achievement.
- Provide translation and interpretation services as needed to support student learning.
Collaboration:
- Communicate effectively with school staff and administrators regarding any issues or concerns.
- Work collaboratively with other teachers and support staff to ensure continuity of instruction.
- Participate in school activities and events as required.
Professionalism:
- Maintain confidentiality of student information in accordance with school policies and regulations.
- Demonstrate professional behavior and a positive attitude in all interactions with students, staff, and parents.
- Follow all school policies and procedures.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Bilingual Education, or a related field.
- Valid state teaching license or substitute teaching certification.
- Proficiency in English and the second language (e.g., Spanish, Creole).
- Previous teaching experience, especially with bilingual or ELL students, preferred.
- Strong knowledge of instructional strategies and classroom management techniques.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit, stand, and move freely for extended periods.
- Capacity to lift and move educational materials and supplies as necessary.
- Ability to supervise and interact with students in a variety of settings.
Work Environment:
- Work is performed in a classroom setting and may require traveling between classrooms and schools.
- Occasional evening and weekend work may be required for school events and meetings.
