JOB TITLE:                                            DRIVER – OPERATIONS TECHNICIAN                        
DEPARTMENT:                                     Transportation& Maintenance
REPORTS TO:                                       Facilities & Transportation Manager
FLSA STATUS/CLASSIFICATION:      Non-Exempt; Classified
SUPERVISORY DUTIES:                      none


 
SUMMARY:  This position provides student transportation to and from school, school field trips and activities, performs a variety of facilities maintenance and repairs for the School District.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Conducts pre-trip safety inspection check of assigned bus; transports students to and from school on assigned routes; enforces District and Department of Transportation (DOT) safety rules and regulations
  • Teaches and conducts school bus emergency evacuation drills to students and teachers twice annually
  • Cleans and maintains assigned bus
  • Maintains work orders, records and logs of mileage, fuel and maintenance or repairs in accordance with regulatory requirements
  • Performs maintenance and repair of school facilities and grounds such as basic electrical, plumbing, HVAC, landscaping and grounds installation
  • Trims trees and shrubbery; mows and maintains athletic fields
  • Paints classrooms and buildings
  • Operates front end loaders, tractors, mowers, power and hand tools and equipment
  • Picks up, sorts and routes mail to appropriate schools; takes mail to post office
  • Follows established occupational safety and health practices and procedures
  • Pick-up and deliver heavy items such as furniture and appliances
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of District rules, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of DOT school bus maintenance and operation regulations
  • Knowledge of loading, unloading and transporting special needs students
  • Knowledge of geographical area of assigned routes
  • Knowledge of basic facilities and grounds maintenance and repair practices and methods
  • Knowledge of the use and operation of power tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of customer service methods and techniques
  • Ability to speak and read English proficiently
  • Skill in safely operating and maintaining a school bus
  • Skill in transporting and managing student passengers
  • Skill in utilizing hand and power cleaning and maintenance equipment and tools
  • Skill in operating wheelchair lifts and safety securement devices
  • Skill in performing basic electrical, plumbing, HVAC, facilities and grounds maintenance
  • Skill in written and oral communications
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
 
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
  • High School diploma or equivalent;
  • Two (2) years driving experience (Preferred)
  • Must possess and maintain Arizona State School Bus Driver and Arizona Commercial Driver License with School Bus
  • CPR and First Aid Certification desired
  • Finger Print Clearance
  • Maintain requirements for access to Fort Huachuca
Any equivalent combination of training, education and experience that meets minimum requirements
 
Computer Proficiency:   
Basic Computer skills

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to reach with hands and arms.  The employee is frequently required to climb, sit, stand, bend, walk and operate foot controls simultaneously. Work requires extended sitting, frequent standing, walking, bending, climbing, carrying and/or lifting up to 50 pounds safely.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Indoors and outdoors, with exposure to all weather conditions and temperatures.  Exposure to all types of traffic conditions.  Exposure to noise, dust, gas and fumes.  The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate and may become excessively noisy at times. May be exposed to hazardous weather and driving conditions, moving lifts and engine parts, power and hand tools and equipment.   Contact with employees, students and public.
