Vida Charter School (Vida) is a K-6 public charter school located in Gettysburg, PA.  Although chartered through the Gettysburg and Hanover school districts, students from ten surrounding communities are enrolled at Vida.
 
Vida offers a bilingual academic curriculum, which focuses on the whole child.  Our school’s purpose is to educate students in Spanish and English.  We promote academic excellence and intellectual curiosity for families who value cross-cultural understanding and healthy lifestyles.
 
Overview of the Organization and its Programs
Vida opened its doors in January 2010. Now in its sixth year of operation, Vida currently educates approximately 240 students. Over the next two years, Vida’s enrollment will reach over 300 students with two to three classrooms per grade.
 
Vida is overseen by a board of trustees currently comprised of nine members. Vida employs approximately 35 teaching and administrative staff members, and its annual budget for the current school year is approximately $2.5 million. Once Vida reaches its maximum enrollment, its annual budget will exceed $3 million. To date, Vida’s net assets total approximately $700,000, the majority held in reserve to address facility expansion needs and instructional priorities.
 
Vida’s educational program primarily focuses on two pillars.
 
Bilingual Education
Students are educated in both Spanish and English from kindergarten through sixth grade, ultimately becoming bilingual and bi-literate.
 
Healthy Lifestyles
Healthy lifestyles is based on the premise that students need to learn to make healthy decisions about their emotional well-being, physical health and social needs.

Strategic Challenges and Opportunities for Vida
Vida is at an important juncture in its school history and is seeking a creative and energetic leader who can solidify the school’s position with area districts and challenge both the school and the community to continue expanding bilingual opportunities for K-12 students. Over its history, Vida has been well-managed and has retained the confidence and support of its school community.
 
Challenges and opportunities for Vida’s new executive director will include:
  • Gracefully navigating Vida’s administrative and instructional improvements as the school continues to grow towards sustainable, long-term success.
  • Partnering with the board to increase the school’s academic performance and student enrichment opportunities.
  • Designing and delivering professional development that is tailored to the needs of Vida’s unique dual language immersion model.
  • Completing the development of an aligned, bilingual curriculum spanning kindergarten through sixth grade.
  • Continuing Vida’s school-wide implementation of Responsive Classroom.
  • Continuing to improve the special education and gifted programs offered within Vida’s bilingual/bi-cultural learning environment.
  • Continuing to build involvement of English and native Spanish-speaking parents in the school community.
  • Continuing to foster relationships with Vida’s authorizing school districts and ensuring Vida is positioned to be re-chartered in 2019.
 
 
Profile of the Ideal Candidate
Vida offers prospective candidates the opportunity to lead an innovative and ambitious school that enjoys strong support from parents, teachers, the board and the larger school community. The top priority for the next executive director is to build the strength and effectiveness of the academic program.  The new executive director is expected to lead respectfully, transparently and effectively.  The executive director will work with the local media and local community leaders to ensure Vida remains a public resource for bilingualism and biculturalism in South Central Pennsylvania.
 
Required Credentials
  • Minimum of five years school leadership experience.
  • Minimum of five years teaching experience, preferably in a bilingual or dual language environment.
  • Either a valid Pennsylvania administrative certificate that covers grades K-6 or the ability to be certified by June 30, 2017.
  • Spanish bilingual preferred.  Vida will consider candidates with basic proficiency in Spanish and the ability to become fluent within an agreed period of time.
 
Skills and Experience
  • Proactive, Inclusive and Effective Leader and Manager
The new executive director must be an experienced leader who can inspire staff, delegate effectively and generate trust and respect across the entire school community. The executive director needs to be hands-on in his or her grasp of the work but comfortable and competent in delegating responsibility. He or she will have the experience and skill to offer useful suggestions, mentoring, and resources to staff.  He or she will act as the school’s liaison between the board of trustees, the staff and Vida families.
  • Educator Knowledgeable about Bilingualism and Bilingual Instruction
The executive director must demonstrate a passion for bilingual education, experience with and knowledge of best practices in the field of dual language immersion (preferably at the elementary level), and the desire and ability to share that knowledge freely and effectively with the instructional staff.
  • Team Builder
It will be critically important to the success of the new executive director that he or she possess the skills to support school-wide and grade level professional learning communities where high-quality educators are given the opportunity to improve their practice. The executive director will collaborate regularly in school governance with a committed board of trustees.  
  • Multi-tasking, Organizational and Time Management Skills
The executive director manages a diverse set of responsibilities. These include: design and implementation of the instructional program, design and management of a $2.5 million budget, and oversight of facilities, human resources, parent engagement and community relations.  The executive director is responsible for governance work related to Vida’s board of trustees and the shared stewardship of a publicly funded institution.  
  • Exceptional Communicator
The executive director must be an exceptional communicator. He or she must be able to listen carefully, speak persuasively, and educate and respond effectively to inquiries from all Vida’s constituents. He or she must maintain close contact with the board of directors and provide timely information and the materials necessary for the board’s oversight of the school.  
  • Approachable, Accessible, and Outgoing
Openness and accessibility are qualities that will be highly valued by parents, staff, board members and volunteers at Vida.
  • Fairness, Respect and Responsiveness to Staff and Others
Fairness, respect, and responsiveness are important institutional values for Vida. The ability to be appropriately decisive in a timely way and fair manner will be an important quality of the new executive director.
  • Flexibility and a Sense of Humor
The need for patience and persistence is required to acclimate to a school that is still a relatively young organization.  The new leader must be nimble and flexible in addressing identified and emerging challenges and opportunities. The ability to face difficult challenges and occasional crises with competence, grace, and humor will be a valuable asset for the new executive director.
