General Responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the school principal facilitate student success and growth in academic and personal skills by implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of individual students and by creating a flexible, safe, and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents, and administration regarding student progress, expectations, and goals, etc.

Commensurate with certification and experience based on the Wicomico County Salary Scale for Teachers.

Full time 10-month position (190 contract days).
Contract Unit:  This position is part of the Unit I (Certificated) bargaining unit.
FLSA:  Exempt

  • Possess or be eligible for Maryland State Department of Education teaching certification in ESOL.
  • IMPORTANT NOTE for Out-of-State Applicants:   Out-of-state applicants can request a Professional Eligibility Certificate (PEC) if they hold a valid out-of-state certificate.    For certification requirements please refer to the Maryland State Department of Education certification webpage. For Maryland testing requirements please check the ETS website.
  • Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives on multi-cultural education;
  • Ability to infuse technology into the curriculum;
  • Ability to provide rigorous and appropriate language instruction to ESOL students that supports the acquisition of English speaking, listening, writing, and reading skills;
  • Exhibit leadership and personal qualities necessary to work effectively with students, parents,
  • and administrators.

 Essential Functions
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials that meet the needs of ESOL students;
  • Promote classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning;
  • Collaborate with other staff members to develop lessons and to use new strategies;
  • Implement all procedures of the ESOL Program as prescribed by MSDE and WCBOE;
  • Maintain appropriate and required documentation on every ESOL student;
  • Monitor ESOL student progress in all aspects of their academic schedule;
  • Conduct ongoing assessment and analyze data of student learning and modify instructional methods to fit individual student’s needs;
  • Ensure that student conduct conforms with the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the principal and other central office administrators as designated by the superintendent.
