JOB TITLE:SCHOOL BUS MONITOR

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: NON EXEMPT

PAYGRADE: M-1

LOCATION: TRANSPORTATION

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: DIRECTOR OF TRANSPORTATION

DAYS/SALARY: 175 Days, Hourly rate Minimum $10.07-$13.62 Maximum


JOB SUMMARY
Assists the driver in providing safe and orderly transportation of students with disabilities on assigned route. Assist the driver of a school bus that transports students with disabilities and other authorized personnel to and from schools or designated locations.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Accompanies Bus Drivers on assigned school bus routes.
  • Maintain safety precautions when students are boarding and off-loading bus. Assist in loading or unloading of wheel chair students, car seat students, etc
  • Assists promptly and quickly with students evacuations in emergency situations.
  • Maintain student discipline; documents and report student discipline problems to the appropriate administrator.
  • Assists in the performance of pre-trip and post-trip walk around inspections of vehicles for equipment check, condition of vehicle, tires, body damage and cleanliness, interior and exterior.
  • Demonstrates behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible.
  • Assist in cleaning assigned equipment by sweeping, cleaning windows, mirrors, and removing trash on a daily basis or as necessary. Ensure all special needs equipment is in proper working order.
  • Operate two-way radio equipment and communicate with transportation office as needed.
  • Observe all traffic laws & safety regulations pertaining to school bus operations.
  • Assist driver in following assigned route and adhere to established schedule.
  • Assist in maintaining order and discipline of student passengers and reporting discipline problems to Supervisor.
  • Maintain all logs and documents necessary to daily operation of school bus.
  • Assumes responsibility for personal daily time card.
  • Assist drivers on extracurricular activities as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms, bend and twist. The employee is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 to 40 pounds individually, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 150 pounds with assistance depending upon route assignment.
  • Ability to safely exit rear of bus from 4’ elevation

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to airborne dust particles when sweeping or cleaning and toxic or caustic chemicals when mixing cleaning solutions or using petroleum, oil and lubricants. The noise level in work environment is generally moderate but could be loud according to bus riders’ activity level. Required to work as part of a team. Assist in keeping student distractions to a minimum.
Moderate exposure to hot and cold temperatures. Moderate exposure to vehicle emissions. MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, blue prints or schematics and memos.
  • Should person desire to become a bus driver and obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), training can be provided.
  • Ability to resolve conflict
  • Must pass yearly physicals.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Skills in typing, word processing, ten key, able to adapt quickly to any new computer software, filing and general clerical duties, knowledge of modern office procedures, knowledge of word processing on various software packages, ability to read, write and perform basic math, ability to use a computer, telephone, ten key, FAX and copier, ability to work and get along well with the public.
 
REQUIRED TRAINING (PROVIDED BY THE DISTRICT)
Training in the following subjects is required during beginning employment and periodically thereafter according to the requirements of appropriate law or administrative guidance:

Motor Vehicle Safety
Fire Safety
Proper Lifting Techniques
