MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 
This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, three (3) years of related experience, and a valid Texas Driver’s License with Class A commercial endorsement.
 
SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
 
This position requires knowledge of and experience with a wide variety of medium and heavy equipment, including dump trucks, hydraulic lifts, forklifts, bobcats, tillers, tractors, mini-excavators, spreaders, and transit-grade systems. Incumbent must have skills necessary to operate, transport, and perform minor maintenance to medium and heavy machinery. Incumbent must be prompt, reliable, and have a willing attitude to perform a variety of tasks with little to no supervision. This position requires knowledge of simple arithmetic and ability to understand written and oral instructions.  Employees in this position must be able to read, write, and speak/communicate in English in order to receive and to provide work-related information in a timely manner to other employees, supervisors, principals, school personnel, volunteers and where appropriate, visitors and students.
 
JOB PURPOSE AND RESPONSIBILITY:
 
This position assumes responsibility for a crew, truck, and equipment in performing a wide variety of grounds duties and specialty work. 
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintains school grounds using medium to heavy equipment.
  • Operates a variety of medium to heavy equipment, including dump trucks, hydraulic lifts, forklifts, bobcats, tillers, tractors, mini-excavators, spreaders, and transit-grade systems.
  • Reads plans and determines pond elevations needed to maintain ponds on district property.
  • Transports medium to heavy equipment throughout district. Unloads and loads equipment at various district locations as needed.
  • Performs asphalt repair throughout the Austin ISD.
  • Routinely checks equipment and performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Operates machinery safely with little to no direct supervision.
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED:
 
Perform other related duties as assigned; however, all employees are expected to comply with lawful directives in rare situations driven by need where a team effort is required.
 
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
 
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Work is performed in indoor and outdoor settings, involving year-round exposure to the elements. Care must be exercised in equipment use to prevent burns, cuts, shocks, crushed fingers, back or foot injuries. This position requires the incumbent to be physically strong and in good health and capable of eight hours of work daily; incumbent should be of physical size and condition normally within ranges of insurance companies “normal range” of height to weight. This position may involve rare exposure to blood or body fluids. Regular attendance is required for this position. 
 
PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:
 
This position reports directly to the Grounds Crew Leader. Incumbent operates with little or no direct technical supervision; however, all major problems are discussed with supervisor. Incumbent may provide work direction to lower classified employees. Incumbent will have contact with Austin ISD employees, students, and the general public.
 
COMPENSATION:
Duty Days: 262
Pay Grade: MT07
Starting Salary: $13.96/Hr
