POSITION:               Literacy Coach
 
LOCATION:             Live Oak Elementary School
 
 
JOB SUMMARY:
 
The Literacy Coach will provide instructional support and coaching to teachers as they work to ensure that each student is able to reach his or her academic potential. The Literacy Coach’s primary role is to work with teachers to support best practices in using data, provide analysis of school-wide trends in instruction, and make recommendations about potential next steps to address areas of need. The Literacy Coach must take a hands-on approach to improve instruction and effectiveness by working at various levels (classroom-, school-, system-wide) to directly improve ELA instruction, and student learning, and foster teacher development. This may include modeling lessons in classrooms, helping teacher groups plan instruction, and facilitating professional development.
 
 
QUALIFICATIONS: 
  1. Minimum of five (5) years of successful elementary teaching experience and certification in reading, or have certification in a core elementary content area as well as have a reading endorsement from an approved institution;
  2. Hold a Master’s Degree or higher degree in curriculum and instruction is preferred;
  3. Knowledge of the design and implementation of standards within the instructional framework across the curriculum;
  4. Knowledge of the processes of successful coaching;
  5. Successful experience in working collegially with teachers;
  6. Successful experience as a staff developer is desirable.;
  7. A strong knowledge base of best practices in standards-based reading and literacy instruction;
  8. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate.
 
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:     
  1. Ability to train teachers in utilizing measures of reading achievement like Lexile scores and universal screeners to diagnose and remediate students;
  2. Ability to use the latest technical technology in education;
  3. Excellent communication and organizational skills;
  4. Ability to function as a positive collaborative member of a team. 
 
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  1. To transform teaching practices and increase students’ literacy skills across the curriculum;
  2. Teaches, models, and facilitates research-based best literacy practices within the school’s instructional program;
  3. Trains teachers to achieve and assist with placing students in the appropriate intervention and support services;
  4. Identifies needs and makes recommendations for appropriate instructional literacy materials and assessments that directly support and align with the Georgia Standards of Excellence;
  5. Instructs designed classes in accordance with formulated plans and outlines, modified as necessary to achieve the learning objectives; all within the policies of the school system;
  6. Maintains the degree of discipline and order in the classroom necessary to effectively instruct students;
  7. Facilitates change in instructional practices of teachers that will enable teachers to diagnose student needs more analytically, plans more productively, and teaches more effectively;
  8. Trains teachers to disaggregate and analyzes literacy and student achievement data to improve student performance;
  9. Collaborates with teachers to identify the literacy needs of students, sets learning goals and targets, and problem-solves with teachers to develop best practices for the continuous academic growth of students;
  10. Provides professional development on best practices in literacy instruction across the curriculum.
  11. Establishes, maintains, and enhances effective communication with administrators, teachers, parents, and other stakeholders;
  12. Observes teachers in their classrooms and offer insight for the enhancement of teaching-learning situations;
  13. Provides specific integration and differentiation strategies that enable teachers to meet the needs of all readers of all abilities;
  14. Networks with other literacy coaches and participates fully in ongoing professional development to extend literacy and instructional competencies in all content areas;
  15. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal.
 REPORTS TO:         Principal
 
SALARY RANGE:   Competitive salary and excellent benefits package in accordance with the DCSS Compensation Guide.
