Title:                  Instructional Mentor
Reports To:       Coordinator of Teaching and Learning
FLSA Status:     Exempt
Summary:         The Instructional Mentor will be assigned to work at the school level and will bring evidence-based practices into classrooms by working with and supporting teachers with the goal of increasing student engagement, improving student achievement, and building teacher capacity. Responsible for providing support to classroom teachers to ensure high-quality instruction in classrooms through modeling, co-planning, and providing feedback to teachers.  The Instructional Mentor will focus on individual and group professional learning in a building that will expand and refine the understanding of alignment of instruction to the Virginia Standards of Learning for effective teaching.  Will provide personalized, 1:1 support to teachers based on the goals and identified needs of individual teachers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Creates positive relationships with teachers and administration.
  2. Communicates and demonstrates research-based instructional practices that result in increased student performance.
  3. Communicates effectively with school and division staff.
  4. Provides organized, individual and/or group learning opportunities for teachers as needed.
  5. Supports in the analysis of student achievement data.
  6. Assists teachers with designing instructional plans based on assessment data as requested by teachers or administration.
  7. Provides supports for classroom motivation and management strategies.
  8. Supports teachers through co-teaching and modeling of best practices.
  9. Assists teachers with specific classroom activities when requested.
  10. Provides support for classroom motivation and management strategies.
  11. Assists teachers in creating materials that are in alignment with curriculum.
  12. Provides teachers resources related to instruction and curriculum.
  13. Aids in researching instructional and/or curriculum issues.
  14. Models effective, differentiated instruction when requested.
  15. Provides encouragement and emotional support to teachers.
  16. Encourages ongoing professional growth for all teachers.
  17. Manages time and schedule flexibility to maximizes teacher schedules and learning.
  18. Works positively toward meeting identified district and building improvement goals.
  19. Assists with development of district curriculum, instruction, and assessments.
  20. Develops and maintains a confidential, collegial relationship with teachers.
  21. Possesses an understanding of when to contact administrators regarding issues of safety/ethics involving students in classroom observed.
  22. Participates fully in professional development for coaches, including peer observations, professional research and reading, and inquiry sessions.
  23. Assists teachers in aligning their teaching with appropriate standards, curriculum and assessments.
  24. Works collaboratively and collegially with other Instructional Coaches, curriculum specialists and district specialists.
  25. Works with building level administration to develop and implement the continuous school improvement process (data analysis, goal setting and action planning).
  26. Assists with the coordination of instructional support for new teachers.

Education and/or Experience:
  1. Must possess a valid Virginia teaching license.
  2. Minimum of five years of successful teaching experience.
  3. Must possess demonstrated knowledge and skills in the development and implementation of a viable, aligned curriculum.
  4. Experience in developing and implementing professional development on effective instructional practices and strategies.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
The Instructional Mentor must demonstrate the ability and professional and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with school and division personnel.  Must possess knowledge of curriculum and instruction design, have a strong foundation in teaching and learning pedagogical practices, and understand the application and use of the Virginia Department of Education resources for curriculum alignment. Must have excellent writing and public speaking skills, outstanding organizational and planning abilities, flexibility to work effectively with individuals and groups, problem solving and conflict resolution skills.

  1. Valid Virginia teacher license
  2. A valid Virginia driver’s license

Terms of Employment
11- month employment. Salary to be determined by the School Board. Grant Funded
Performance of the position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Prince Edward County School Board’s policy on evaluation of professional personnel.
