Description

Social Worker
(Position anticipated and contingent upon Board approval)

Position Purpose:

Provide students, parents, administrators, and other teaching staff with support and consultation to overcome personal, emotional, familial, or social issues to maximize student learning experiences. 

  

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as liaison between the school and community groups to assist in determining and identifying eligibility of students for support in school and/or community programs.
  • Serve as the district’s homeless and foster care liaison.
  • Collaborate with school staff to communicate concerns with students and parents regarding attendance, social/emotional, and academic concerns.
  • Assist in the planning of therapeutic, remedial, and behavioral modification activities provided by the educational agency.
  • Provide supportive casework to children and their families including parent education and self-advocacy.
  • Assist students and their families to gain access to formal and informal community resources.
  • Consult with stakeholders to facilitate understanding of factors in the home, education agency and community that affect the students’ educational experience.
  • Consult and collaborate with educational agency personnel, parents and community resources in areas that impact student learning (e.g. mental health, behavior management, school safety, diversity, crisis management, child abuse and neglect).
  • Act as a liaison between members of the school, community agencies and organizations.
  • Work with individuals, groups, and organizations to develop programs and systems that promote student welfare and achievement.
  • Promote collaboration among community health, mental health and welfare service providers and facilitate student access to those services.
  • Serve as an active participant within the Student Assistance Program (SAP), providing consultation as needed.
  • Attend grade-level, child study teams, 504 and IEP meetings as needed.
  • May provide school staff development and training services.
  • Conduct home visits when questions of residency or attendance are present.
  • Assist in the development of attendance improvement plans and support buildings with truancy issues at all levels.
  • Assist agency personnel working within the schools to follow guidelines and communicate with district staff in an effective manner.


Additional Duties:

  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Travel Requirements 

  • Travels to school district buildings, student homes, and professional meetings as required. 

  

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities 

 

-  Knowledge of Social Work principles, theories, testing, methods, etc. as well as proven behavior management methods. 

 

-  Knowledge of differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles. 

 

-  Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and the formulation of action plans. 

 

-  Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students. 

 

-  Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed. 

 

-  Ability to organize and coordinate work. 

 

-  Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff and parents. 

 

-  Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth. 

 

-  Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work. 

  


Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards:

Works in standard office and school building environments. 

  

Qualifications Profile: 

  • Master’s degree in Social Work
  • Current PA License as a Social Worker (LSW)
  • Knowledge and ability to work successfully with at-risk students
  • Adept at conflict resolution, facilitating discussions, and accessing resources
  • Valid Driver’s License & reasonable mode of transportation maintained during employment
  • Ability to make sound judgements and work under high levels of stress

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Certified as a School Social Worker in PK-12
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

Experience: 

  • Successful prior social work experience preferred

Terms of Employment:

  • Salary and work experience set per current Collective Bargaining Agreement

Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions outlined in PDE educational specialist evaluation requirements.
