JOB DESCRIPTION SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER JOB TITLE: SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER DEFINITION: This is a skilled full-time position under the administration of the School Principal. The employee will work cooperatively with children and adults. The employee is required to perform teaching/mentoring, which results in appropriate student achievement and good self-esteem; to teach basic academic and living skills, adapting teaching techniques and methods to meet individual needs of students. The employee will be responsible for organizing and leading activities of children in the comprehensive development classrooms. The employee will appropriately represent the system and the profession to parents and the community. Student populations include, but not limited to, children who are dependent upon others for basic self-care activities as well as autistic children. The teachers will work in either a year-round or traditional school calendar and/or flexible schedule if called upon to do so. This position is classified as Exempt. The employee is subject to a post offer physical examination with a written statement from the physician showing a satisfactory health record and stating the employee is free of any contagious or communicable disease in such form as might endanger the health of school children, as well as results of a TB skin test. All employees hired after January 1, 2000 are required (post offer and prior to commencement of the employment duties) to supply fingerprint samples which are submitted to a criminal history records check conducted by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. All hiring decisions are contingent upon satisfactory criminal background check results. EQUIPMENT AND JOB LOCATION: The employee will work in their assigned school, in their assigned classroom. Work is usually performed indoors within Murfreesboro city limits. The employee will occasionally work outdoors, when the children are playing outside. The employee may be exposed to loud noise, foul odors, and smells generally associated with food. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB: Accommodate the varied learning styles and developmental levels within the classroom/program. Manage behavior in ways that maximize learning and the development of good self-esteem. Plan, prepare, teach, assess, adjust, re-teach, and re-assess in order that appropriate documented student achievement results. Participate in school and system sponsored activities (i.e., parent clubs, fund raisers, field trips, extra-curricular, etc.) Consult with parents, colleagues, and other appropriate individuals or agencies concerned with student achievement, behavior and development. Faithfully serve on study, planning and advisory committees as assigned. Maintain accurate and current student records, including but not limited to, on-going documentation of progress and cumulative records and IEP’s. Attend required meetings and accurately complete required reports in a timely manner. Stay abreast of current trends in the profession and maintain a flexible attitude toward the implementation of new ideas in the classroom/program. Comply with applicable local, state, and federal policies and procedures. Plan curriculum and prepare lessons and other materials, considering factors such as individual needs, abilities, learning levels and physical limitations of students. Confer with parents, administrators, testing specialists and others to develop educational program for students. Arrange and adjusts assistive technology and equipment utilized by the students in the classroom. Devise special teaching tools, techniques and equipment Instruct students in academic and other activities designed to provide learning experience. Escort children to classes, lunchrooms, treatment rooms and other areas of the building. Must be able to perform job duties as described on essential functions addendum ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED: Perform other duties and special projects as assigned REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must hold valid Tennessee teaching license with appropriate endorsements for services to children pre-school through sixth grade in the specialty area endorsement appropriate to the position. Must have B.S. in Special Education Must have legal authorization to work in the United States of America Must have knowledge of and/or the ability to learn occupational hazards and safety precautions; Universal precautions must be taken due to possible contact with fluids Must be able to report to work on time and to perform the duties of the job for the entire workday. Must have sufficient physical strength and ability to independently and repeatedly lift, move and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds (frequently) and up to 100 pounds (occasionally) Must be able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees and to effectively communicate with the public The ability to use good judgment while performing job related tasks Must be able to articulate clearly Must be able to see, hear, and move quickly enough to provide for the safety and instructional needs of the children. Must have emotional coping skills appropriate for the management of student behavior Must be able to assist the students in eating, resting and toileting and assist children to perform other physical activities, as their needs require. Must be able to pass physical abilities test/post offer screen for employment STAFF RELATIONSHIP: Directly responsible to the School Principal TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Local rate of salary and benefits negotiated annually by the Board of Education and Association; 200 days.
