Position: Teacher Assistant – Southeast School Reports to: Program Administrator, Southeast Alternative School Job goal: To assist the classroom teacher in meeting the day to day needs of the students Their involvement with the students begins from the time they pick the students up in the morning until they drop them off in the afternoon. Due to the length of time with the students, their interactions and relationships developed with our students are instrumental in the student’s progress. Qualifications: 1. Professional Educator License with Stipulations issued by ISBE endorsed as para professional. 2. Physical ability to be trained and perform physical management of students 3. Illinois Driver’s License with a clear driving record over the past 3 years. Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Monitor and assist students as needed in daily routines. 2. Initiate and follow through with behavioral interventions in an appropriate manner. 3. Handle classroom problems quickly and efficiently. 4. Communicate with teachers regarding student progress/behavior/special needs. 5. Participate in planning meetings regarding communication, academic, vocational and behavior needs of students and contribute in developing goals and strategies in these areas. 6. Participate in multi-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary meetings, when asked. 7. Collect data and provide follow through for learning activities. 8. Actual teaching of individuals or groups of students following the teacher’s lesson plans and with teacher direction. 9. Help students follow individual daily schedule. 10. Accompany, assist, and monitor students, as needed, in all other areas of school programs outside of classroom (mainstreaming, vocational, or community). 11. Assist other staff in working with students (even those not assigned to the teacher assistant) on a temporary assignment or emergency basis to maintain a quality program. 12. Maintain a high level of role modeling behavior for students. 13. Escort and/or transport students to meet program and students’ needs as directed by assigned teacher and program administrator. Terms of employment: Minimum 174 day work year at a pay rate established by the Board of Control in accordance with its Agreement. Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the Board of Control policy on evaluation of educational support personnel.
