Description:  Nutrition Service Assistant

Job Summary:  The Pelham Nutrition Service Assistant helps to prepare and serve students and staff nutritious and appealing meals in a sanitary and efficient manner.
Qualifications:  High School Diploma or GED, sanitation training or willingness to attend training, proficient math, reading and computer skills, able to lift 50 lbs.
Responsibilities:  Assist food preparation under the supervision of manager/team leader, maintain standards of sanitation and safety, production, service and food quality, able to work independently and as team member, develop and maintain excellent customer service relations with students, parents and faculty.
Compensation and Benefits:  Starting Pay Rate:  $11.65 / hour.  This position is not benefit-eligible - except as required by law.

JOB TITLE:  Nutrition Service Assistant

STATUS:  4 hours per day/182 days per year

REPORTS TO: Nutrition Service Manager & Director of Nutrition and Wellness
 
JOB SUMMARY:  Completes a variety of daily tasks under the supervision of the site Manager to ensure meals, snacks, etc are prepared and served in a safe, sanitary, quality driven and appealing way.  Runs Cash Register.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED;
  • Proficient math, reading and computer skills;
  • Ability to work as a successful team member;
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the primary functions of the job.
EXPECTATIONS:
  • Reports to work on time;
  • Works together as a team to complete tasks/jobs given;
  • Completes daily work within scheduled shift;
  • Follows all district and departmental policies and procedures;
  • Follows nutrition services uniform and hygiene policies
  • Follows instruction appropriately.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
  • Follows all USDA and sanitation regulations as pertinent to the school nutrition service program;
  • Maintains awareness of any special diet or food preparation (food allergies) for the purpose of ensuring the health and safety of the students and staff.
  • Prepares, serves and cleans all food items and equipment as per instruction from Manager and/or Director, as necessary;
  • Verifies any food produced meets quality
  • Fill out cleaning logs, production records and temperature logs
  • Knows how to use food service computer system and district email system, as needed;
  • Assists with ordering of food, supplies, production records and other forms, as necessary;
  • Offers suggestions regarding menu and production methods to improve the program;
  • Attends all in-service meetings, workshops, and trainings as scheduled by the Director;
  • Maintains 8 hours of annual continuing education/training;
  • Practices good customer service with all staff, students, and other customers;
  • Prepares food and/or works any special functions as assigned, by the Director;
  • Reports any unsafe equipment or work hazards to the Manager, as needed;
  • Assists with implementation of HACCP plan and implementation of the plan;
  • Performs functions of other nutrition services positions for the purpose of ensuring each station/job/function is completed on a daily basis, as needed.
  • Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Manager/Director of Nutrition and Wellness
If assigned to cashier task:
  • Calculate total cost of items on food tray
  • Insure that if student purchasing a meal it is appropriately entered in to the POS system as a reimbursable meal or non-reimbursable meal.
  • Ensure validity of meal cards when used
  •  Total cash/tickets at the end of work period.

Ability to work with staff, vendors, regulatory agencies, and the community. 
 
Summary of Occupational Exposures:
Disinfectants, sanitizers and other cleaning fluids, school lunches, and general office environment.  Temperature variance from heat of ovens to cold of freezer or cooler.
 
Other Considerations and Requirements:
This position requires employee to be able to work with a variety of people on a daily basis.
Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check will be required prior to employment.  Incumbent has no authority for disciplining students during school hours.
