Title: School Social Worker/Counselor – Low Incidence Programs Hearing Impaired, Vision Impaired, Physically Handicapped Classes
Reports To: Program Administrator/Coordinator
Job Goal: The School Social Worker/Counselor facilitates the social/emotional development of low incidence students by providing comprehensive services to students, teachers, and other school personnel, and coordinates services to and for the families.
Master’s degree in Social Work/Counseling;
Type 73 certificate; experience with low incidence populations, Illinois State Board of Education approval as either certified Social Worker/Counselor or “necessary personnel”;
Total Communication with a working knowledge of sign language, knowledge of psychological/social aspects of hearing impairment, visual impairment, physical handicap, and knowledge of diagnostic measurement as it applies to the hearing impaired, visually impaired, and physically handicapped.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Support low incidence children on an individual basis as determined by MDC and implement direct service as recommended
Provide group guidance and social skills activities for students related to topics such as self-awareness, social awareness, and accepting hearing loss, visual impairment, and/or physical handicap relative to functioning in school, family relationships, etc.
Consult with teachers and provide support regarding students social/emotional needs
Provide support and consult with parents of low incidence children in areas related to the functioning of their child in his educational program and his home. Facilitate parent information and support groups as needed
Participate in IEP and Eligibility Determination Conferences to facilitate communication regarding student needs
Refer students who need assistance in adjusting to school to SASED for evaluation, followed by a staffing to recommend service
Attend departmental, interdepartmental, professional, and community based meetings as requested
Assist in formulation of annual goals and objectives addressing the social emotional needs of low incidence students
Coordinate referral of students and/or families to community agencies as per directions of MDC/IEP
Participate with consultants in planning in-service for teachers in social emotional aspects of education for low incidence students
