JOB PURPOSE:  Provides evaluation and instruction to students with communication disorders as defined in their Individual Education Program. 
  1. Master’s Degree. 
  2. Must obtain a current State of Alaska certificate issued by the Department of Education. 
  3. Must be certified Speech Language Pathologist
Duties, Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
  1. Meets standards of competent teacher performance.
  2. Provides speech and language screening for referred students and those requiring follow-up.
  3. Conducts diagnostic evaluations utilizing available diagnostic data, to identify and assess the needs of students with                    suspected articulation, language, voice, or severe communication deficits. 
  4. Makes medical referrals for students with suspected hearing loss, voice disorder aphasic disorder, or cleft palate.  
  5. Serves as a member of multidisciplinary evaluation teams, as needed, and as the sole evaluator of a student with suspected communication disorder, to assess developmental levels and functional communication abilities.  
  6. Participates in initial IEP meetings and case reviews as necessary.
  7. Provides direct and indirect therapy to correct, treat, or alleviate speech and language impairments using a variety of instruction techniques appropriate to the student’s needs. 
  8. Provides services through both an "early intervening services" (§300.711) plan and/or Response to Intervention (RTI) model as adopted by KGBSD in its mission statement.
  9. Demonstrates skill in establishing and maintaining classroom management that is conducive to learning. 
  10. Complete paperwork related to Medicaid billing and reimbursement regulations.
  11. Provide services to students in the least restrictive setting (LRE), an emphasis in serving students with language needs in the regular classroom for student in preschool and the primary grades under and IEP, early intervening services, and/or an RTI plan.
  12. Consults with and advises parents and educational personnel regarding appropriate intervention, practice, or remediation strategies. 
  13. Communicates and works effectively with students, staff, parents, and community members. 
  14. Conscientiously attempts to fulfill the intent of district policies and building goals. 
  15. Preforms certain non-instructional duties and other duties as assigned. 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Language Skills:   Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general educational periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, State and Federal Grants, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, staff, and parents. 
Mathematical Skill:  Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. 
Reasoning Ability:  Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. 
Problem Solving: Can identify and resolves problems in a timely manner.  Gathers and analyzes information skillfully.  Develops alternative solutions.  Works well in group problem solving situations. Uses reason even when dealing with emotional topics.

Other Skills and Abilities:  Demonstrated ability to operate computers and related software.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
Physical Demands:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk or hear.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus.  The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands and interact with the public and other staff.
