Position Description:

A Resident Principal, in partnership with School Leadership, will be responsible for leading and developing a staff serving Kindergarten through 8th grade. A Resident Principal will ensure that the school meets the unique needs of its community from an academic, social-emotional, personalized learning standpoint. A Resident Principal will support Distinctive leaders in continuing and strengthening instructional and cultural practices and will complete a rigorous development process to further develop his / her own school leadership skills. This person will: 

Overall School Leadership

Supports development of the school leadership team's school-wide vision & takes an active role in investing and inspiring teachers to achieve the collective goals of the school

Owns the implementation of select school priorities in support of the school-wide growth plan

Actively works to build strong family, student, and community relationships

Models impactful communication with all stakeholders

Participates in an individualized development process focused on expanding school leader capacities

Models commitment continuing a strong diversity, equity, & inclusion focus on campus and within the Distinctive Schools network

Instructional Leadership

Drives implementation of the school's improvement goals as defined by the campus growth plan

Supports successful implementation of network-wide core curriculum, including deep knowledge of CCSS and Next Generation Science Standards

Collaborate with network and campus leaders to regularly assess teaching and learning

Effectively coaches teachers towards instructional excellence through regular observation, feedback, and accountability for instructional adjustments, including lesson plan review, data & design meetings and teacher intellectual preparation

Collaborates with Principal and DS Academic Team to design and execute professional learning based on current campus needs

Models & supports ambitious instruction by ensuring lessons are challenging and engaging 

Promotes student-centered learning environments that integrate social, emotional, and cognitive skill-building with academic content

Coach emerging leaders on their instructional practices or instructional support practices

May plan or lead collaborative planning meetings focused on learning environment, instructional strategies and progress monitoring and responding to student data

School Culture & Discipline

Models strong staff & student culture

Monitors schoolwide culture goals and supports systems for collecting and tracking data on school culture metrics (including discipline and attendance)

Supports and informs the consistent and fair administration of school policies regarding student conduct and discipline

Guides family communication related to culture 

Works with dean of students and campus leadership to create proactive family communication plans and student celebrations

Collaborates with campus leadership team to facilitate and plan school culture and climate professional development

Collaborates with dean of students and school leadership to create and present formal reports on school culture, safety, and school operations

Collaborates with culture team to complete learning environment and teacher framework observations

Collaborates with leadership team on updates to the Student Code of Conduct

Student Achievement & Growth

Develops deep understanding of assessment tools and practices

Utilize student data in student-centered, challenging instruction & aligned curricula

Connects teachers with culturally responsive and relevant curricular resources to increase access for all students

Collaborates with network leaders to set quarterly academic goals

Leads data-driven design and planning by supporting teachers and coaches to:

Determines how data aligns to end-of-year goals (what is being assessed and how it maps to standards & competencies

Disaggregates data to analyze how different student groups are performing

Determines what data reveals about  student mastery and growth

Identifies specific instructional actions and adjustments to fill students' knowledge and skill gaps and a timeline to do so

Supports teams with a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) of instruction and intervention

Continuous Improvement & Innovation

Collaborates with administrative team to refine school model and improve implementation of curriculum

Communicates a clear process for school improvements to ensure rigorous academics and effective school culture for all students

Models strong staff & student culture strategically and as needed

Manages school-wide character development and behavior management systems

Analyzes student academic and survey data via a diversity, equity, & inclusion lens

Collaborates with administrative team on hiring diverse, highly-effective teachers and school staff

Desired Qualities

Demonstrated track record of high achievement as a teacher and a leader

Belief in education reform, with a nod to innovative approaches to learning

Understanding of learning standards and P/SAT, including prior experience teaching to these standards/assessments

Familiarity with best practices related to academic content and pedagogy

Evidence of prior success leading adults and establishing environments marked by positive cultures

Demonstrated ability to work exceptionally well with colleagues and parents

Patience, flexibility, and a willingness to take risks

Experience working with diverse student populations and children with developmental differences

Committed and able to meet the unique social-emotional needs of all students

Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and reflection

Strong motivation and commitment to our students' wellbeing and preparing them all for success in their post-secondary pursuits

Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree 

3-5 years teaching experience

Experience serving in an instructional leadership capacity, such as academic coach, Dean, or Assistant Principal

Track record of using data to drive student outcomes

Knowledge of personalized learning with a focus on small group instruction

Experience using technology for instruction, communication, and efficiency

Strong and demonstrated commitment to advancing equity and justice in education and beyond

Excellent relationship-building and coaching skills

Excellent oral and written communication skills
