4.00 hours/day for 206 days (pro-rated)
6:00pm to 10:00pm

Salary: $16.98 - $22.21/hour (Depending on Experience)

JOB SUMMARY
The Custodian position, under general supervision, performs a variety of custodial duties and general care of school building(s) and surrounding grounds to ensure a safe and clean school building and environment for students, staff, parents and patrons.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties of this position include the following tasks.  Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks.  Other duties may be assigned at any time.

  1. Responsible for cleaning areas as assigned (i.e., rooms, halls, offices, rest rooms, cafeteria, etc.), vacuums, shampoos, sweeps, scrubs, waxes, polishes, mops all types of floor surfaces, washes windows, white boards, walls, doors and baseboards; cleans and polishes furniture, windows, metal work and computer screens; washes, scrubs and disinfects restrooms and locker rooms as well as cleans sinks, fixtures, panels and drinking fountains daily. Picks up paper and other debris, empties and cleans trash and recycling receptacles and moves trash and recycling to outside dumpsters.
  2. Ensures proper operation of HVAC and lighting systems. Maintains indoor and outdoor lighting, changes light bulbs as necessary and adjusts clocks.
  3. Performs light maintenance and repairs, including plumbing, carpentry, painting, etc. Completes deep cleaning projects during summer months and other times school is not in session.
  4. Maintains building security, including appropriately opening and closing the building and ensuring lock up procedures are followed.
  5. Stocks supplies and equipment following district and department procedures; checks and stocks bathroom supplies daily.
  6. Maintains safe environment for students, public, and staff; reports safety, sanitary and fire hazards immediately to supervisor.
  7. Cleans up spills (including bodily fluids) in safe and appropriate manner.
  8. Sets-up, takes down and moves tables, chairs, equipment, shelving and partitions for meetings, athletic events and other district needs as assigned.
  9. Coordinates and ensures compliance with all pertinent federal, state, local and Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) rules, regulations and requirements, including labeling and use of hazardous chemicals, asbestos identification and removal, and MSDS compliance.
  10. Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required.
  11. Assists as necessary or required in an emergency, including fires, earthquakes, lock-out/lock-down, etc.
  12. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of all district policies and procedures.
  13. Consistent, daily and punctual attendance.
NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 
Non-essential duties of this position include the following tasks. Employees in this position perform some or all of these tasks. Other duties may be assigned at any time.
  1. Operates and troubleshoots various office equipment including telephones and photocopy machines.
  2. Attends in-service trainings, staff meetings and other meetings as assigned.
  3. Prepares for and cleans up after special activities and events.
  4. Maintains necessary or required employee, equipment, and facility paper and electronic records.
  5. Reports issues to the supervisor and the appropriate authorities including vandalism, thefts and errant wildlife.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  1. Consistently follows all applicable federal and state laws and all district policies, rules and supervisor directions.
  2. Observes ergonomics of sedentary office work including placement of computers and monitors, and sitting alignment.
  3. Observes proper lifting techniques and other strategies to avoid accidents and personal injury while performing job duties.
  4. Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.

QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • Education and/or Experience:    High school diploma or GED is required. Thorough working knowledge of custodial work, including cleaning methods and materials, hazardous chemical use, labeling and storage, and proper use of custodial equipment and tools. Ability to do minor equipment and building repairs and working knowledge of boilers, heating and ventilating systems and controls related to those systems is required. HVAC training or experience preferred. Three (3) years of previous experience working in sanitation, custodial or maintenance positions is preferred.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Focuses on solving conflict, maintaining confidentiality, listening to others, keeping emotions under control, remaining open to others’ ideas and contributing to building a positive team spirit. Demonstrates the ability to remain calm and professional in an environment with frequent interruptions. Interacts with staff and students appropriately.
  • Language Skills: Ability to communicate English fluently both verbally and in writing, including proficiency in spelling and grammar. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, parents, staff, regulatory agencies, vendors and members of the community. Ability to read and interpret documents including governmental regulations, safety rules and operating and maintenance instructions/ instruction manuals. Ability to prepare routine reports and correspondence with high degrees of accuracy and professionalism.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to calculate rates, ratios, percentages, proportions and area, including circumference and volume. Ability to read and interpret various charts, bar graphs and similar visual data depictions.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in oral, schedule or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving more than one variable.
  • Computer Skills: Ability to effectively use office computers and internet access for email, research, word processing, database manipulation, visual presentations and general web-based applications.
  • Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to appropriately communicate with students and teachers.  Ability to operate variety of custodial/maintenance equipment. Ability to exercise good judgment and work in a dynamic environment.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: A valid First Aid Card and Oregon Driver’s License are required. Must have or be able to obtain various certificates, licenses and/or registrations as required by federal, state or local law(s) and/or determined by the district.

When performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, see, or hear. The employee is occasionally required to, push, pull, bend, stoop, crawl, kneel and crouch. The employee must lift and/or move up to 35lbs. and occasionally more than 100lbs. The employee may occasionally climb stairs or ladders. The employee must have, with or without vision correction, close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment is inside and outside of public school buildings. The noise level of the work environment is usually low to moderate, but occasionally high depending upon the location, the student population and current activities. The employee is regularly exposed to wet or humid conditions and outdoor weather conditions, including seasonal heat and cold. The employee may occasionally be exposed to contagious diseases, bodily fluids and blood-borne pathogens.

The employee will be regularly exposed to moving parts of machinery, a variety of cleaning agents, some hazardous chemicals and fumes, risk of electrical shock and mechanical vibration.

Special Requirements:
The person selected for this position must be able to provide: proof of educational requirements, verify identity and employment authorization, complete a pre-employment record check and be approved by the State Department of Education after having a Fingerprint-Based Criminal History Verification completed.  The selected candidate will pay $10-$20 for a set of fingerprints and $59.00 for the verification check.
