Position Title:    Reading Teacher/ Specialist
Department:         Instruction
Reports To:         Principal/Designee

 

SUMMARY:
The Reading Specialist will be responsible for providing reading skills instruction to students working below grade level and will assist school-wide efforts in promoting literacy and in raising expectations for students learning.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Provide direct instruction in reading and in reading strategies to designated individual groups of students.
  2. Design and implement an instructional program for each student, according to students needs.
  3. Conduct instruction in such ways as to foster skills development and positive self-esteem in students.
  4. Preview and order appropriate materials for class.
  5. Keep necessary records.
  6. Collaborate with teachers to plan for and identify students eligible for additional help in reading.
  7. Coordinate and/or administer diagnostic tests.
  8. Participate in team and parent meetings when appropriate.
  9. Provide information and consultation for classroom teachers.
  10. Evaluate student progress and report results.
  11. Report to parents and teachers regarding student progress.
  12. Review and communicate results of Georgia’s Milestones tests with parents.
  13. Keep abreast of current trends and best research-based practices in reading instruction.
  14. Demonstrate/model reading strategies that will assist teachers in providing reading instruction across the curriculum.
  15. Attend conferences and workshops.
  16. Interpret and report test results and statistical data concerning reading to the administration, staff, parents, and the public at large.

 
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Students, aides and volunteers as necessary.
 
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Current Georgia Certification in K-12 Reading or Middle Grade Reading Endorsement. Evidence of successful teaching experience with students at the Middle School level. Excellent organization, interpersonal, and problem solving skills.  M.A. in Reading preferred.
 
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid Georgia Certification in K-12 Reading or Middle Grade Reading Endorsement.
 
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, parents, staff, students, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
 
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
 
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Valdosta Board of Education policies.

Valid teaching certificate.

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the designated school administrator or supervisor.
