Paraprofessionals by definition are those that “generally assist teachers in the classroom, supervise students outside of the classroom, or provide administrative support for teaching…with additional enrichment activities for students.”
The Native American Elementary Education Paraprofessionals will be responsible for supporting the vision and mission of the Native American Indian Education Program and Flagstaff Unified School District.
These positions are integral for FUSD’s Native American students at the Elementary Level which impacts the student body as a whole and will ensure the safest and best quality of educational support is provided to each student, family, and school through collaborative efforts of all stakeholders in education and Native Culture. 

 

Position Title:               Native American Elementary Education Paraprofessional - 3 Positions Available
Department/Section:    Native American Education / Sites TBD
Supervisor:                    Building Principal/Supervisor of Native American/Indian Education Program

Pay Grade:  Paraprofessional Tier III - $13.63 - $14.96 /hour (depending on experience).     
Grade:  7
Schedule:  27.5 to 32.75 hours per week, Monday – Friday, daily hours to be determined with assignment.

Start Date:       Anticipated date of September 8, 2020 (SY 2020-2021)

Benefits:    Positions of 20 hours/week or more qualify for Arizona State Retirement System
                    Positions of 30 hours/week or more qualify for the full FUSD retirement and insurance benefits

Summary of Functions: 
The Native American Elementary Education paraprofessional will assist with implementation, supervision and evaluation of a comprehensive educational plan for Native American children in the school setting. The candidate will also serve as a liaison between the families and the school relaying academic and cultural enrichment activities. Assist the Native American Indian Education program in family activities, award ceremonies and presentation of cultural sharing with the whole student body.

Qualifications:

A.  REQUIRED

  • High School Diploma or GED Requires
  • NCLB (No Child Left Behind) qualifications required which include:
    • 60 post-secondary hours of college coursework or AA degree; or
    • Passing of Arizona Department of Education Paraprofessional Test (The FUSD Family Resource Center administers the paraprofessional test.  Please call 928.774.1103 for more information and to schedule a testing time.)

IMPORTANT:  FUSD may consider and hire candidates who do not yet meet the NCLB requirement. You will be hired as a substitute parapro in a temporary/non-benefit status, paid at $13.00/hour, until you complete and show proof of meeting the NCLB requirement. (The NCLB requirement is completion of 60 post-secondary hours of college coursework or an AA Degree, or passing the AZ Department of Education Paraprofessional Test.) You have a maximum of 60 calendar days to meet the NCLB requirement.  Once the requirement is met, you will become eligible for benefits (if working 30 hours/week or more), and your pay will be revised to reflect the hourly rate for the position in which you’ve been hired.  If the requirement is not met within 60 calendar days, your substitute assignment will end, and the position will be reopened to other applicants.
 

B.  DESIRED

•    Experience working with students in an elementary setting.
•    Knowledge of social, educational and economic circumstances that affect Native Americans.
•    Knowledge of technology and software programs.
•    Experience working with Native American students/ parents.
•    Minimum of three years pertinent work experience.
•    Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential.
•    Capability of physically assisting student with special needs as required.
•    Native American Language Proficient.


C.    OTHER:

•    Positive interpersonal skills and proven ability to work well with people.
•    Knowledge of surrounding Indian reservations and the geographical locations of FUSD school boundaries.
•    Knowledge of community resources to assist families in Flagstaff or surrounding Indian communities.
•    Successful experience in group facilitation skills, consultation techniques and problem solving strategies.


Duties and Responsibilities: These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this task.
  • Assist in the educational and social development of students under the direction and guidance of the school administrator and Native  American/Indian Education Supervisor.
  • Assist in the collaboration of Child Study Team and observations of ideal learning environment for the student.
  • Inform parents of school programs and assist parents with problems experienced in the school, the community or with students.
  • Make home visits or phone calls to disseminate information regarding the school and the child's educational program.
  • Monitor and follow up on school attendance, academic progress, and work with parents/students for improvement.
  • Collect Certification of Indian Blood and help families complete for 506 for JOM program requirements.
  • Recruit parent volunteers to assist students in the classrooms and to serve as classroom resource persons.
  • Plan, coordinate and educate parents in family and cultural trainings and/or activities, including parenting classes, family literacy, preschool recruitment; transition activities for Pre-K to Kindergarten, 5th grade - 8th grade.
  • Attend tribal chapter/community meetings to disseminate information school programs, school policies and enrollment/recruitment efforts.
  • Conduct an annual needs assessment for parent involvement activities and develop/implement plans accordingly.
  • Participate in parent/teacher conferences and evaluations.
  • Assist the school with compliance documents required by Indian Education Department.
