Length of Term: 2020 - 2021 School Year

Position Purpose: To create a flexible special education program and a virtual class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with pupils; to motivate pupils to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for elementary grade education, in accordance with each pupil's ability; to establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members. Virtual Academy teachers are expected to perform the duties and responsibilities of their job within the established school day and are expected to be available to administration, staff, students, and parents during that time.
 
Responsibilities
 

1. Curriculum, Instruction, and Student Assessment: Implement District Virtual curriculum. Fargo Public School District Virtual Academy students use technology to gain academic success. The curriculum requires teachers to act as coaches and provide direct instruction, review pacing, provide feedback, and make instructional decisions regarding student progress.
Priority: Essential | Percent of Time: 40%
Examples of this work include:
  • Maintains a strong instructional focus utilizing the elements of effective technology-based instruction; monitors student progress with formative assessments and use results to differentiate instruction.
  • Evaluates pupils' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate and accurate records and prepares progress reports using District-approved software and programs and as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Address various learning styles and instruction in a virtual setting; adapts instruction to meet the needs of all students; appropriately recognizes and reinforces individual student effort.
  • Sequences content at an appropriate pace.
  • Uses appropriate level of questioning to promote understanding.
  • Relates lesson content to prior and future learning.
  • Requires students to summarize information in written and/or verbal form.
  • Represents knowledge/information non-linguistically through a variety of methods.
  • Organizes students in cooperative or ability groups when appropriate.
  • Creates instructional tasks that are meaningful and related to learning goals; requires students to analyze and apply knowledge.
 

2. Virtual Classroom Environment and Management: create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students.
Priority: Essential | Percent of Time: 30%
Examples of this work include:
  • To be well-organized and knowledgeable of all materials to support students in the virtual academy.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior to achieve an effective learning atmosphere that is consistent with the philosophy of the Virtual Academy.
  • Creates an environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, interest centers and exhibits of student's work.
  • Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior in collaboration with Virtual Academy principal to help ensure safety and positive school climate.
 

3. Student and Family Engagement: develop and maintain academics relationships with students and their guardians.
Priority: Essential | Percent of Time: 25%
Examples of this work include:
  • Communicate a high level of expectation and clear learning goals to students and families.
  • Communicates regularly with parents outside normal classroom day by means of newsletters, notes, phone calls, conferences, etc.
  • Is available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day.
  • Plans and coordinates the work of paras, parents, and volunteers in the classroom and on field trips.
 

3. Other duties as assigned: General support and professional development.
Priority: Secondary | Percent of Time: 5%
Examples of this work include:
  • Maintains knowledge of current education policy trends including extensive knowledge of comprehensive assessment systems and evidence-based practices; promote the education profession.
  • Contributes to the implementation of special projects when assigned; Assist with district-level professional development.
  • Participates in general staff meetings; participates in all mandatory training or training appropriate to the position.
  • Provides general student supervision as needed. This includes but is not limited to locations indoors and outdoors, such as the lunchroom, bus stops, playground, classroom, field trips, public transportation, assemblies, and kitchen.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
 
Minimum Qualifications
  • Display enjoyment, humor, and enthusiasm for teaching and expect students to enjoy learning
  • Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education
  • Hold or have the ability to obtain a North Dakota teaching licensure; Kindergarten or Special Education endorsement may be required for certain positions
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Intermediate level competency in software to be used and taught within the education program. This includes but is not limited to:
    • Video conferencing software such as Zoom, Google Hangouts, Citrix Go-To Meeting, or a similar program
    • Virtual classroom application such as Google Classroom, Blackboard, or a similar program
    • Online School-to-Family communication software or applications such as SeeSaw or a similar program
    • Online Mathematic software or applications such as Dream Box, Knewton Alta, or a similar program
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years of successful teaching experience
  • Master’s degree in Elementary Education
  • Previous Instructor experience in a virtual setting
