Director, Data Analytics & Strategy

Supporting the work of all Network departments (School Support, Teaching and Learning, External Affairs, Advisory, Operations, etc.) with data reporting and analysis/interpretation to ensure the network progresses toward its goals. This includes: ensuring the creation and dissemination of data reports and tools to schools, school leaders, and network departments and leaders; helping to set goals at the network and school level; building the data literacy of network and school leaders and staff; data analysis and reporting for internal decision-making and monitoring; identifying trends and areas of celebration or concern in student, school and network performance; preparing data for external compliance and for communication with key external stakeholders; and preparing the network for any upcoming changes in District/State policy or data.
Essential Job Functions

  • Shape and drive the execution of AUSL's performance strategy to gauge progress toward student achievement goals and drive continuous improvement of teaching and learning (metrics including but not limited to on-track, attendance, 5 Essentials, student assessment results, and college applications, acceptances, and enrollments)
    • Build and maintain data reports for each school to allow leaders to track progress toward goals in real time, and work with school leaders on an ongoing basis to be able to understand and act upon performance data
    • Inform school priorities and organizational strategy by identifying and elevating key performance trends and insights
    • Facilitate annual school goal-setting by working with Directors of School Leadership and Principals to understand realistic targets given historical data and likely future performance
  • Operationalize a data-craving culture across the network by training and educating various stakeholder groups on metrics and increasing data literacy across school and network leaders and staff
    • Continually benchmark against best practices in the field
  • Support the work of the network in developing a pipeline of strong teaching talent through:
    • Working with the Recruitment team to analyze patterns in recruitment data that may suggest most effective strategies
    • Working with the CTR team to collect and analyze data on the Resident experience and performance in the classroom, and how they could be improved
    • Working with the CTR and Coaching teams to develop tools that effectively measure and collect data on the coaching patterns and outcomes across the network to drive improvements in coaching that lead to improved teaching
  • Communicate performance data and trends with a range of internal and external audiences
    • In partnership with the Managing Director of External Affairs, package data and analysis for funders, policy makers, thought leaders and other key constituents to build AUSL's brand both locally and nationally
    • Prepare summary data and analyses for meetings of the Board of Directors, Annual Reports, compliance reports, and other high-stakes external communications
    • Support network leadership in data-focused meetings at CPS
Other Responsibilities
  • Serve as one of the network's "go-to" experts on leading practices, both within and outside of the network
    • Work with leaders across the network to codify and disseminate best practices
    • Participate in city-wide or national communities of learning to share and collect best practices and highlight the work of AUSL
    • Support the Advisory Services team with educating other districts around AUSL’s key data-related practices
  • Shepherd the network through changes in data policy, systems, or accountability practices
    •  Liaise with CPS to keep abreast of new developments and share information back with the network
    • Provide training to key network stakeholders as appropriate
  • Strengthen the vertical alignment of data reporting across the network
  • Work with the Curriculum & Instruction and Coaching teams to underscore linkages between assessment data, curriculum, and differentiated instructional practices
  • Work with the School Support team to evaluate the effectiveness of network strategies around student interventions (both academic and behavioral)
  • Education and relevant experience
    • Master's degree in quantitative/analytical discipline (doctorate degree in statistics and/or extensive research experience a plus)
    • 5 years of experience in education research, management and/or leadership
  • Analytical and technical expertise
    • Powerful analytical and critical thinking skills, with ability to translate technical knowledge into practical and user-friendly guidance
    • Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Expert proficiency in Microsoft Excel and fluency with sophisticated statistical packages (SPSS, Stata, R) and data visualization tools
    • Experience interacting with large and complex databases

  • Travel requirements
    • Travel to other school districts across the country (5%)
    • Travel across AUSL schools and various meetings throughout the city (50%)
Work Environment
All work takes place within school buildings in an open office environment; temperatures and noise levels may vary.
Physical Demands
Ability to sit for the majority of the workday; ability to stand for up to 2 hours at a time.
