TITLE:                                    CUSTODIAN
  1. Black Seal License
  2. Minimum experience as determined by the board – must have earned a high school diploma or equivalent.
  3. Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  4. Knowledge of cleaning methods and procedures; and proper handling of hazardous materials.
  5. Must meet physical requirements of the position, which includes considerable bending, walking, shoveling of snow, lifting and moving objects.  Must be able to perform tasks that require lifting and moving objects that may weigh up to 75 lbs.  Also must be able to climb to heights of 20 feet or greater.
  6. Current holder of Black Seal License preferred.  If not presently a holder of Black Seal License, shall obtain a Black Seal License within one (1) year of date of hire, at employee’s expense.
  7. Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
  8. Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.
REPORTS TO:              Facilities Manager or Night Foreman
JOB GOAL:                   To provide a safe, clean and comfortable school environment.
  1. Opens/closes the building each day.  Determines, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.
  2. Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
  3. Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times.
  4. Cleans and dusts classrooms, offices, library and faculty room daily; dusting, sweeping, mopping, cleaning glass and empties waste baskets in these areas.
  5. Cleans corridors after each school day, and during the day when their condition requires it.
  6. Daily cleans and sanitizes bathroom to include but not limited to sinks, faucets, toilets, urinals and floors.  Also replenishes paper and soap supplies as needed.
  7. Daily sanitizing of all surfaces to include but not limited to hand rails, desks, light switches, door handles and push plates.
  8. Cleans and sanitizes all drinking fountains daily.
  9. Cleans cafeteria dining areas after use.
  10. Obeys all fire/safety and environmental laws and regulations relating to the plant operation.
  11. Cleans whiteboards daily.
  12. Moves furniture or equipment within the building as required for various activities and as directed by the head custodian or principal.
  13. Complies with all laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of recyclables, trash, waste, and debris.
  14. Cleans all windows on both the inside and outside as scheduled.
  15. Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
  1.    May be required to wear a standard uniform selected by the district for security purposes.

1. Data Utilization:  Requires the ability to arrange, compare, count, differentiate, measure and/or sort data and/or information.  Includes judging whether readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics are similar to or divergent from prescribed standards, procedures or routines.
2. Human Interaction:  Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance and/or interpretation to others on how to apply procedures and standards to specific situation.  Requires the ability to effectively present information to students, staff, and community.
3. Verbal Aptitude:  Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety or reference, descriptive and advisory data and information.
4. Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of electrically powered custodial equipment and hand-held supplies and cleaning tools.
5. Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; may require ability to calculate decimals and percentages.
6. Functional Reasoning:  Requires ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral and diagrammatic form.  Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.  The ability to apply “common sense” in situations
7. Situational Reasoning:  Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.
1. Work involves the performance of duties where considerable physical exertion is required as a normal part of the job.  Assistance may be available to perform unusually demanding physical tasks.  Work may involve lifting and carrying objects weighing as much as 75 pounds up to 50 yards as a regular part of the job.  Climbing, stooping, bending, reaching, crawling, twisting, balancing, walking, and sitting for extended periods of time may be required as a normal part of the job.  Employees must not have any limitations of motion and vision (may be corrected).  Hearing must be a normal range as measured by a standard audiogram.  A normal sense of smell is required to detect the presence of waster or hazardous materials.  Finger dexterity, sense of touch, gripping with fingers and hands is essential.  As indicated in the Verbal Aptitude section, verbal communicative ability is required in dealing with students, staff, and community.

Tasks are regularly performed with potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as:  strong odors, fumes, dust, wetness, humidity, machinery, vibrations, excessive noise levels, temperature extremes, disease, pathogenic substances, waste products, electrical or mechanical hazards, and toxic/poisonous agents.  Work involves all types of floor surfaces, a variety of facilities, and will include being exposed to blood and body fluids.  Work is performed approximately 90% indoors, and approximately 10% outdoors.  Rotating shift work is required.
