Maintenance/Custodian Full Time

Job Summary:            The Maintenance Worker/Custodian provides maintenance and custodial services at assigned locations, ensuring an attractive, sanitary and safe environment for students, staff and visitors. Assists in preparing facilities for classroom activities and campus events.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The information contained in this job description is for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and is not an exhaustive list of the duties performed for this position.  The individuals currently holding this position perform additional duties, and additional duties may be assigned.
  • Cleans assigned facilities and grounds including classrooms, offices, gym, restrooms, cafeterias, multipurpose rooms, and pools; sweeps, scrubs, mops, washes, and polishes floors; disinfects and washes windows, counters, and walls; vacuums rugs and carpets; dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork; cleans chalk boards and erasers; empties pencil sharpeners; cleans drinking fountains.
  • Replenishes classroom and restroom supplies (paper towels, soap, etc.) ensuring adequate quantities for daily use; restocks supply and storage areas.
  • Empties and cleans waste receptacles; picks-up trash containers and empties into large bins for proper disposal.
  • Grooms landscaping around school site buildings, parking, and play areas; removes trash, and rakes and grooms planted areas.
  • Prepares site for daily operations; opens gates, raises flags, and sweeps walkway; ensures facilities are operational and hazard free.
  • Secures facilities and grounds to include doors, windows, gates, alarms, and lights; checks assigned areas for vandalism; observes pedestrian and visitor activity at the assigned site and reports unusual activity or behavior to the appropriate authority.
  • Maintains and makes minor repairs to buildings and fixtures; reports other repair and maintenance needs to appropriate authority.
  • Performs a wide variety of general and semi-skilled maintenance activities such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, and electrical work; installs system component parts; assists skilled maintenance workers with completing work orders efficiently.
  • Moves furniture and equipment; sets-up meeting rooms, classrooms, and other school facilities for special meetings and events.  
  • Monitors activities in and around work areas (e.g. halls, multipurpose rooms, cafeterias, restrooms, grounds, etc.) to prevent injuries and ensure site safety.
  • Responds to emergency situations during and after hours to resolve immediate safety concerns. 
  • Picks up students’ personal effects and transfers to lost-and-found.
  • Maintains assigned vehicle, tools and equipment to ensure availability in safe operating condition.
  • Prepares written materials such as repair status reports and activity logs.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, trainings, and seminars as directed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications: Listed below are the minimum qualifications for this job, though an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience may be accepted.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) or more years of custodial experience.
  • Requires Valid Indiana Drivers License

  • Requires prolonged walking and standing.
  • Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials of up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequently requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, bending and reaching.
  • Must be able to work in noisy and crowded environments.
  • Must be able to work in hot or cold environments.
  • Requires the ability to talk, see, feel, and hear. 
  • Frequently requires the ability to use hands to fingers, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but may be excessive at times. 
  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors where significant health and safety considerations exist from physical labor and handling of materials that include waste and blood-borne pathogens.
  • The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substances in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Corporation.
