SUPPORT TEACHER/PARAPROFESSIONAL JOB DESCRIPTION 

SUPPORT TEACHERS 

Support teachers supervise students and deal with the maintenance of the classrooms. They are hired to provide ADDITIONAL support to teachers and students. Effective support teachers/paraprofessionals: 

? Become familiar with the Employee Handbook and follow all of its directives 

? Act in an ethical and professional manner at all times, as a positive representative of SCS 

? Create a culturally responsive classroom that promotes an acceptance of and respect for differences 

? Create a positive culture and climate in the classroom conducive to learning and in accordance with the Responsive Classroom Approach 

? Develop positive and professional relationships with students, colleagues, school community partners and families 

? Maintain a neat, well organized, child-centered, and attractive prepared environment 

? Participate in Professional Development activities, Professional Learning Communities, and Staff Meetings 

? Attend all school sponsored events and meetings as the principal may direct 

? Work to develop close and effective relationships with students, supporting those who need additional assistance with attention or behavior 

? Other job duties as assigned by the principal 

SPECIFIC TASKS MAY INCLUDE: 

? Monitor students while learning, allowing teachers to pull small groups for instruction 

? Maintain classroom resources to ensure students have the tools they need to succeed 

? Help to keep a productive and calm tone in the room 

? Support students who are struggling with behavior or focus 

? Assist with clerical responsibilities such as lunch count, money transactions and attendance. 

? Supervise the class during lunch, recess and specials. 

? Actively assist specialists, where assigned 

? Lead Wednesday afternoon enrichment classes 

? Offer clerical support: copying, preparing materials, organizing the classroom 

? Assist with keeping the classroom orderly 

? Take pictures of students in action for the Scoop or Twitter 

? Assist with arrival and dismissal 

? Occasionally serve as a classroom substitute when the lead teacher is absent. 

SUPPORT TEACHERS SHOULD NOT: 

? Be in charge of instruction or left in the classroom during the teacher’s student contact time 

? Communicate with parents unless the lead teacher has made this request 

? Lead the class for extended periods of time 

? Be expected to take work home or plan for lessons 

? Assess student work 

? Be solely responsible for instruction in any subject or assessment of students 

? Act in ways that conflict with the classroom or school policies, procedures or routines 

Lead and support teachers should make arrangements to maintain open communication and planning. The lead teacher is responsible for delineating classroom expectations and requests of the support teacher. The support teacher should feel comfortable asking for clarification.
