Long Term Substitute ELL Teacher (August 31 - November 20)
Under the direction of the Principal in conjunction with the Director of English Language Learner (ELL) Education, the ELL Long Term Substitute Teacher will provide English language development (ELD) instruction to students who have been identified as English Language Learners. The ELL teacher will also work with classroom teachers of ELLs to make the curriculum accessible to them. In cases where an ELL student is learning English for the first time, the ELL teacher may be designated as the student’s primary ELA teacher. Where an ELL student is at an intermediate-transitioning level of English proficiency, the ELL teacher’s role will be supplemental to that of the primary English/Language Arts teacher.
Essential Functions and Duties of the Position

- Assess English proficiency of incoming students to determine ELL eligibility.
- Deliver direct instruction to students who have been identified as English language learners.
- Administer the annual ACCESS test for ELL students.
- Maintain documents/records required by the DESE for ELLs. Provide ELL Director with requested documents in a timely manner.
- Provide leadership within the school with respect to the academic, social and emotional needs of English Language Learners.
- Consult with and assist classroom teachers of ELL students to scaffold lessons, assignments, and assessments as appropriate for individual students.
- Observe and model lessons to provide classroom teacher additional capacity to support English language learners.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to monitor the progress of ELL students and offer suggestions for intervention to meet students’ linguistic, academic and cognitive needs through differentiated instruction.
- Analyze ELL student MCAS and other relevant data to determine areas of student need and provide appropriate instruction.
- Work with principal and K-12 ELL Director to ensure effective and efficient integration of ELL and regular education resources in efforts to support English language learners.
- Collaborate with principal and curriculum leaders to ensure that classroom curriculum is aligned with WIDA standards.
- Provide leadership at the building level with respect to parent communication
- Masters Degree preferred
- Minimum of 3 years of classroom teaching, including ELL teaching experience preferred
- ESL Certification: PreK-6
- Must have deep understanding of theories and teaching methodologies along with sophisticated understanding of the academic, social and emotional needs of children learning English as a second language.
- Must have a working knowledge of the WIDA standards and the Massachusetts Common Core.
- Must be a highly motivated, self-starter who can work both independently and collaboratively.
- Must have ability to collect and analyze data in order to make recommendations for instructional programming.
- Must have well-established communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to share information and resources as appropriate, including strong written communication skills.
