Primary Purpose:  
The Special Education Instructional Coach will be responsible for providing leadership and coordination in aligning special education support services to instructional programs in all subject areas.


Education / Certification:

  • Valid Texas Teacher Certificate with Special Education Certification
  • Minimum three years experience as a classroom teacher
  • Valid driver’s license with driving record that meets District requirements

  Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Plan, implement and evaluate a comprehensive program of academic support for students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) within the special education program
  • Knowledge of the Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process
  • Knowledge of curriculum, accommodations and modifications
  • Knowledge of the writing process and reading/writing connection strategies for all special education student populations.
  • Knowledge and experience with teaching and planning for all 5 components of the reading process
  • Knowledge of research-based academic intervention techniques, methodology, and assessment instruments specific to students with disabilities
  • Knowledge of the creation of and monitoring of the Standards-Based IEPs process
  • Ability to organize and interpret data to make recommendations for support of students and classrooms
  • Ability to develop and deliver training to adult learners
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with assistive technology tools and strategies
  • Knowledge and experience using a coaching process with other teachers
  • Ability to manage multiple projects effectively
  • Demonstrated teacher leadership skills


  • Three years of successful experience working directly with students with IEPs

  Major Responsibilities and Duties: Program/Instructional Management:

  • Work cooperatively with district staff and campus principals in developing and supervising the instructional programs in relation to special education
  • Collaborate with teachers to design and develop individual and small group academic intervention plans and provide support to instructional staff in implementation of these plans
  • Provide on-going small and large group training sessions on Standards-Based IEPs
  • Provide individual and group assistance with writing PLAAFPs, goals and progress reports
  • Demonstrate “best practices” models and strategies for teachers in the classroom setting and provide follow-up discussion
  • Collaborate with general education curriculum coordinators to ensure students with disabilities are provided Access to the General Curriculum
  • Participate as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Conduct ongoing follow-up assessments/observations of progress on the plans and services for specific students
  • Assist teachers with the integration of technology into their instructional practices

Student Management:

  • Consult with parents, teachers, administrators and other relevant individuals to assist in effective programming to meet individual student needs

Organization Improvement:

  • Analyze critical needs in assigned areas and work collaboratively to implement and improve programs
  • Keep abreast of new developments in the field by reading professional literature, attending seminars and relevant training opportunities and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field
  • Compile, maintain and file all physical and computerized reports, records and other documents required
  • Follow district and department policies and procedures

Other Responsibilities:

  • Comply with policies established by federal and state law, including but not limited to State Board of Education and local Board policy
  • Perform all other duties as assigned
