  • Verifiable skills in the mechanical trade
  • Universal refrigerant license (can be obtained after hire)
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license
  • First Aid/CPR (Can be obtained after hire)
  • Asbestos Awareness Training (Can be obtained after hire)
  • Mold Awareness Training (Can be obtained after hire)
  • Completion of a recognized trades apprentice program for a specialized mechanical trade.
  • Any other combination of related education, experience, and training.

The employee performs skilled work in the maintenance of heating and cooling systems in all district buildings.  The emphasis is on troubleshooting, optimizing performance of equipment, installing new equipment and upgrading older equipment.  Work is conducted with little supervision.  Work methods and procedures usually are determined by the employee and results are assessed by the supervisor.  The employee may supervise the work of a small number of employees.

Essential Functions
  • Diagnosis trouble in cooling and boiler control circuits.
  •  Supply and return systems, and repairs, replaces, or modifies the malfunctioning unit.
  • Calibrates and adjusts thermostats to maintain a proper balance of temperature in classroom and work areas.
  • Services, adjusts and maintains flame safeguards on boilers, reads stack temperatures and gases and adjusts burners for most efficient combustion. 
  • Overhauls and maintains large air conditioning and cooling towers.
  • Directs the activities of other technicians.
  • Performs work according to printed information on the Facilities Department work order system.
  • Accomplishes duties of mechanical maintenance and repair without direct supervision on a daily basis.
  • Operates heavy equipment or other tools as needed.
  • Responds to emergencies.
  • Uses positive verbal and non-verbal skills when working with district personnel and community members at all times.
  • Drives various fleet vehicles daily.
Other Functions:
  • Snow removal
  • May participate in asbestos removal with appropriate training
  • Maintenance of power tools and shop area
  • Assists other members of the department as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Work Environment/ Physical Demands
Ability to sit for long periods of time, numerous distractions, visual, auditory and ambulatory acuity important
Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds

Additional Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills, and Mental Ability 
Expert knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and practices of mechanical trades and of mechanical maintenance and repair. Ability to follow and understand oral and written instructions. Ability to deal tactfully with the public and staff. Ability to respond under pressure to immediate situations while maintaining courteous and professional relationships with staff and the public. Ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy. Ability to use good judgment and common sense. Ability to follow established safety practices. Ability to work independently and with others. Ability to read and interpret plans (blueprints). Excellent mathematical skills.
Knowledge of how to inspect, adjust and repair HVAC equipment. Ability to use experience and logic in trouble-shooting HVAC equipment and associated equipment. Ability to read blueprints, procedures and instruction sheets. Ability to perform all functions of the position.
