Position: School Counselor

Under general supervision, the guidance counselor utilizes leadership, advocacy, and collaboration to promote student success, provide prevention services, and respond to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic, career, and personal/social development for all students.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Develops and maintains a written plan for effective delivery of the school counseling program based on individual school assessment of needs.
Communicates the goals of the program to faculty and staff, students, and their families through different outlets. (newsletters, calendars, memos, web pages, etc.)
Maintain current and appropriate resources for faculty and staff, students, and their families such as career resources and college and scholarship information.
Provide direct services through the Guidance Curriculum, Individual Student Planning and Preventive and Responsive Services.
Provides leadership and collaborates with other educators in the school-wide integration of the State Guidance Curriculum Standard Course of Study.
Implements developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school goals.
Assists all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career and personal/social skills, goals and plans.
Accurately and appropriately interprets and utilizes student date.
Collaborates with parents/guardians and educators to assist students with educational and career planning.
Provides individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs.
Consults and collaborates effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators and other educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs.
Implements an effective referral and follow-up process.
Accurately and appropriately uses assessment procedures for determining and structuring individuals and group counseling services

Bachelor’s degree in School Counseling or related field
Ohio Department of Education Licensure- School Counselor
Knowledge & Experience
Thorough knowledge of professional guidance counselor methods, procedures and practices.
Good knowledge of the community and area served by the assigned school.
Some knowledge of or ability to quickly learn the instructional programs, school requirements, and community resources.
Ability to design and implement sound intervention plans.
Ability to establish and maintain rapport with students, parents, school personnel, and resource person in the community.
Ability to moderate differences between family members and school personnel.
Ability to communicate effectively with parents, students, school personnel and resource persons in the community.
Ability to work cooperatively with parents who may be reluctant to school personnel intervention.
Ability to organize and conduct workshops for parents and/or school personnel.
Ability to operate office appliances in preparation of instructional materials.
The employee is frequently required to sit, reach, handle/ grasp objects and occasionally required to stand, walk, lift, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. Ability to walk, run, climb, crawl, or stand for extended periods of time.
The work occasionally requires eye/hand/foot coordination.
The employee constantly lifts and/or moves items weighing up to 10 lbs.
The work environment may expose the employee to blood borne pathogens, student population with behaviors symptomatic of mental health issues or distractible behaviors. Students may have severe visual, hearing, orthopedic, or social awareness issues.
Due to high caseloads, mandated paperwork for IEPs, ETRs, progress notes, etc. are completed in evenings and on weekends.
School based therapy sessions are frequently interrupted by loudspeaker announcements, changing environmental schedules, testing dates, field trips, student absences, and mandated meetings requiring Social Worker attendance.
