This position will be responsible for providing program support to students in Special Education.  This support may be provided in the general education classroom or special education classroom.  Job opening locations include Windom Area Elementary and the Middle/High School.

Job Title:                 Special Education Paraprofessional                   
Reports To:             Building Principal
FLSA Status:          Hourly/Non-Exempt
Union:                      Paraprofessional

Summary (Brief description summarizing the overall purpose and objectives of the position)
  • Provide assistance to both students and teachers in implementing lesson plans
  • Work on an individual basis with students when necessary
  • Provide support within the educational setting
Essential Functions (Typical tasks but not all inclusive—major duties of the position)
  • Work with special education and general education teachers in providing support for the requirements of the student’s individual education plan (IEP)
  • Provide individual and small group support
  • Work with special education and general education teachers to administer accommodations and modifications as required in a student’s IEP
  • Assist in preparing instructional materials as well as daily and weekly progress notes
  • Monitor and supervise student behaviors as required in a student’s IEP
  • Assist in managing behavior problems
  • Monitor students in non-classroom environments (i.e. lunchroom and recess) as assigned
  • Keep accurate records as directed by the special education teachers
  • Work with the special education and general education teachers to provide support for the requirements of the student’s IEP
  • Attendance is an essential element for this position due to direct support for students
  • Perform other duties as necessary and assigned

  • Basic proficiency in math, reading, and writing

  • Knowledge of the confidential nature of student information and communications

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with students, parents, teachers, administrators, and community members
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students, teachers, and administrators
  • Ability to use modern technology and related software
  • Ability to demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment toward the job and mission of the school district
Education and Experience (Minimum level of education and experience required)
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Two year or four year degree preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience in a job-related field
Licenses, Certificates, and Registrations (Minimum required to perform the job)
  • Para Highly Qualified status according to current statute and union contract (or obtained within one year)
  • Crisis prevention intervention (CPI) training
Supervision (Level of supervision received and supervision exercised/size of group supervised)
  • Work is performed under limited supervision of the building principal and special education teacher
Working Conditions (Physical requirements and environmental conditions)
  • Travel between buildings may be required
This is non-sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, physical mobility, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information through normal spoken word; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, inspections involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions and may be exposed to blood borne pathogens.
