Gloucester High School                                                                                                                                                                  FLSA: Exempt/220 days/11 months
SALARY: $42,695 - $71,756, depending on education and experience.
GENERAL STATEMENT: The School Counselor assists students, school personnel, and families with relevant educational and personal/social/career goals. The position develops and implements effective programs for all students while collaborating as a member of the school’s multidisciplinary team.
QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Eligibility for Virginia teaching licensure, with the appropriate endorsement
2. Knowledge of national, state and local school counseling
3. Excellent communication and computer skills
4. Aptitude and competence necessary for assigned responsibilities
5. Ability to make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures
6. Satisfactory completion of all onboarding requirements prior to first day of employment, including, but not limited to:
 • Documentation of eligibility for employment in the U.S.
 •  State Police/FBI criminal history background check
 • Virginia Department of Social Services background check
 • Tuberculosis test/screening completed within the last 12 months
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: 1. Provides a comprehensive school counseling program for students in grades PreK-5.
2. Collects, analyzes and uses data to develop, implement, and evaluate the school counseling program.
3. Provides students and families with immediate and long-range planning and course selection as appropriate.
4. Provides individual and group counseling for students.
5. Works collaboratively with school staff to foster an effective learning climate and to offer information, strategies and approaches for maximizing the total development of students.
6. Takes an active role interpreting and conveying the school's goals and objectives to students, parents, and the community at large.
7. Works with staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the student services department.
8. Orients students to school procedures and the school’s varied opportunities for learning.
9. Assists in the academic success for all students and guides students in their participation in school activities.
10. Confers with parents whenever necessary.
11. Provides professional development for staff in areas relating to school counseling.
12. Identifies and uses community resources which provide student assistance and services
13. Maintains accurate and appropriate student records.
14. Pursues professional growth by attending state and local staff development programs and/or conferences; joining professional associations; reading professional journals; attending relevant workshop and conferences; and taking post-graduate courses.
15. Attends evening meetings such as open house or any other activities as requested by the principal.
16. Acts in a courteous and respectful manner, using good judgment and appropriate communication skills at all times.
17. Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality regarding students, parents, and other staff members.
18. Models non-discriminatory behavior in all activities.
19. Performs related work as required
WORKING CONDITIONS: Average amount of climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, grasping, talking, and other repetitive motions required.
START DATE: The anticipated start date for this position is the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year
