Job Title: Special Education Specialist

Classification: Certified Teacher

Primary Function: This individual will develop comprehensive educational services for children experiencing learning difficulties.  He/She will assist the regular education classroom teacher in providing adaptations and accommodations for students who have been identified as having a disability and/or students who have not been identified as disabled but are demonstrating deficits.  

Accountability: Director of Special Education/ Building level administrators 

Qualifications:        

Education/Certification

  • Illinois Professional Educator’s License (PEL) w/SPED endorsement or 

  • Illinois Professional Educator’s License (PEL) in Psychology or Social Work

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Background of successful special education experience or assessment experience in the school setting

  • Thorough knowledge of curriculum and instruction and current educational trends

  • Thorough knowledge of teaching effectiveness and teacher evaluation

  • Understanding of adult learning theory

  • Development and/or coordination of professional development

  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

  • Knowledge of Special education state and federal laws

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide district-wide services as a member of the district’s Pupil Personnel Team

  • Facilitate annual reviews, initial MDC’s, and three year re-evaluation conferences in the district 

  • Provide student academic information during the three year re-evaluation and initial conferences

  • Provide classroom observational data, educational screening data, and educational evaluations

  • Actively participate in the design of student IEPs

  • Consult with teachers about ways to accommodate SPED students in the regular classroom

  • Provide teachers with current instructional strategies for teaching SPED students

  • Facilitate high school transitional meetings

  • Consult with parents in regards to the diagnostic evaluation

  • Organize and facilitate Special Education Early Childhood Child Find activities

  • Facilitate integrative therapy meetings

  • Facilitate SPED problem solving meetings

  • Promptly complete records, forms, and reports and maintain records as needed to comply with district, cooperative, state, and federal regulations

  • Comply with district parent/teacher conference policies and state and federal regulations relative to student conferences

  • Continue professional growth by updating knowledge of current legislation, special education policies, and assessment practices

  • Other duties as assigned
