Job Title: K-8 English Language Learner Teacher (.4 FTE)

Department: North Star Academy

Supervisor: Academy Director or Academy Principal 

FLSA Status: Exempt


This position provides support and instruction for English language learners in our school.

Essential Duties

The following are the essential duties of this position.  Other duties may be assigned:

Provide ongoing support for students who are acquiring English as a Second Language.

Track individual student progress in accordance to MN ELL standards.

In cooperation with classroom teacher provide strategic direct instruction for students acquiring English, one-to-one or in small groups, within the classrooms.

Use technology tools for instruction, planning and communicating.

Assist in the on going assessment process to determine student’s status, identification of ELL students

Administer state assessments to all ELL students

Create and manage a responsive learning environment that enables students to feel safe, to be creative and to develop to their full potential.

Partner with colleagues, working together with classroom teachers and “specialist” teachers to create a positive learning environment.

Possess people skills for working collaboratively with colleagues and in active partnerships with families

Plan with classroom colleagues, following up with supportive teaching materials and strategies for working with ELL students.

Utilize appropriate curriculum with fidelity

Analyze incoming data on a regular basis

Collaborate with house team, curriculum coordinators, classroom teachers and parents

Provide quarterly reports to parents and attend  relevant SLC’s

Maintain and update student files

Attend staff meetings and trainings

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in education or an equivalent combination of education and experience permitting one to obtain appropriate licensure as a teacher by the Minnesota Department of Education.  Licensure and/or experience in teaching English Language Learners is required..  

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common journals, reports, and education related documents.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or concerns from students, caregivers, regulatory agencies, or members of the school community.  Ability to write lesson plans and other materials that conform to commonly accepted style and format.  Ability to effectively present information to students, caregivers, management, and colleagues.

Mathematical Skills

The ability to analyze and understand data represented multiple ways (charts, graphs, etc.); identify trends or 'root causes' in data; and calculate with percentages.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Google Docs and a strong background in instructional technology platforms.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Valid Minnesota Teacher's License appropriate for the particular grades or subject matter assigned.
