Description

Middle School Spanish Teacher (Long term substitute: Monday, March 9, 2020 through Friday, April 17, 2020)

Position: 
The Needham Public Schools seeks outstanding applicants for the position of Spanish substitute teacher at Pollard Middle School.   The successful candidate will plan and teach 7th and 8th grade Spanish beginning March 9th through April 17, 2020.

Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • Develops and administers world language education curriculum consistent with the 5-C ACTFL World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages; as well as program, school and district goals and objectives.
  • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
  • Develops and implements rigorous and relevant lesson plans, activities, and learning experiences to ensure meaningful language acquistion for each student. 
  • Teaches Spanish culture and language to develop students' cultural and linguistic competence.  
  • Emphasizes communicative proficiency and, as developmentally appropriate, explicitly develops students' knoweldge of grammar and syntax, sentence and paragraph structure, composition, vocabulary and proper word usage, colloquialisms, and interpretation of literature.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, modifies instructional methods address individual student needs and differentiates lessons. 
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance, as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensures that student conduct conforms with the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within grade level, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Collaborates frequently with world langauge department colleagues to develop curriculum, materials, and special learning experiences to inspire a love of language learning. 
Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Director of World Languages, Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to inspire a love of Spanish language learning in Novice-low to Novice-high learners 
  • Ability to foster students' growth mindset as developing language learners and to promote language learning as a life-long skill
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy
  • Knowledge of the identified language, in terms of grammar, word usage, word denotations and connotations, and literature
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed (ie: Google Docs, Google Classroom, etc)
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work
Qualifications Profile
  • MA State Certification as a middle school Spanish teacher
Education
  • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
  • Masters Degree in related area preferred.
Experience
Successful prior world language teaching experience a plus.
