Lakeside School, an independent coeducational day school located in North Seattle, Washington, is currently recruiting for a full time (1.0 FTE) Upper School English Teacher starting late August 2020.

The English Teacher position, reporting to the Upper School English Department Head, will join a collaborative department that consists of ten faculty members and offers a full range of courses in English, American, and international literatures. The Lakeside English Department uses grade-level curricula in the first three high school years. 9th and 10th grade courses cover a broad selection of international literature, and the 11th grade is dedicated to American Literature. In 11th grade, students choose either American Studies, which combines with a History course, or American Cultural Studies, which features a common core of texts as well as texts selected by individual instructors. The English Department’s numerous, wide-ranging, and multiculturally oriented 12th-grade electives emphasize many different literary traditions and genres; they also include experiential, creative, and innovative courses, some of which are interdisciplinary. Specific responsibilities for this position include:
  1. Teaching 4 sections of classes in some combination of different grade levels. Courses emphasize the study of fiction, poetry, drama, and non-fiction, as well as the craft of writing in different modes. Classes study, discuss, and write about literary works as expressions of various cultural, sociopolitical, and historical contexts. Class sizes are capped at 18 students, and most classes approach or reach that limit;
  2. Working with a diverse student body who come to school with different and evolving lived experiences and levels of preparation. This work includes providing academic support for students outside of class time (answering questions, one-on-one work, etc.), as needed to achieve equitable support and outcomes for all students;
  3. Collaborating and participating in the work of the English Department to develop innovative, equitable, and inclusive curricula, pedagogy, and assessment strategies;
  4. Attending department, grade level English team, and faculty meetings as scheduled;
  5. Advising a group of between 8 and 10 Upper School students;
  6. Participating in the life of the school community.

Requirements and Qualifications 
  1. The successful applicant will have at least a BA or BS in English or a related field. An MA, or PhD in English or a related field is preferred;
  2. Academic preparation in or experience teaching texts from a variety of countries around the world are also preferred;
  3. Experience in teaching high-school aged students is desired, though those whose teaching has focused on early college years are also encouraged to apply;
  4. Familiarity with computers and internet resources, as well as an interest in technology integration in the English curriculum, are essential (PC/Windows platform);
  5. Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions. The candidate will understand different perspectives, interact respectfully with cultures other than their own, and cultivate meaningful relationships with people who have different cultural frameworks.
  6. Candidates must satisfactorily complete two criminal background check
