Position: Elementary School Assistant Principal

Reports To: Chief of Elementary Schools

Salary Schedule / Grade: Refer to Salary Schedule

F.L.S.A Status: Exempt

 

 

SUMMARY

Under general supervision, the Elementary School Principal manages the staff, program and physical

resources of an elementary school building, and performs related district-wide administrative duties as

required or assigned.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This is the highest level of administration and supervision at an elementary school. The incumbent is

responsible for supervising and managing the staff, programs, and physical resources of an elementary

school.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

(Incumbent performs a majority of the following duties)

 

Continuous Improvement

  • Develops and communicates a shared school vision and goals with the staff

  • Establishes and reinforces measurable goals to promote high levels of student and staff achievement

  • Models and provides resources to support staff contributions toward the attainment of school-wide goals by monitoring progress through the use of data

  • Studies, analyzes, and addresses the educational and social changes of the building, district, and community served by the school and develops plans to address those changes

 

Instructional Leadership

  • Uses disaggregated achievement data to determine needs and improve instruction

  • Supervises the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of instructional programs and materials

  • Provides leadership in implementing, sustaining, and evaluating the standards-based departmental curriculum consistent with the district’s goals and objectives

  • Conducts systematic and frequent classroom visits and provides feedback on instruction and assessment

  • Guides and monitors the implementation of research-based instructional practices

  • Establishes expectations and monitors the effectiveness of the interdisciplinary team concepts and processes

  • Understands the use of differentiated instruction to promote student achievement

  • Provides ongoing learning opportunities and strategic professional development and training for staff

  • Ensures and monitors the implementation of Career-Technical Programming

 

School Operations, Resources, and Learning Environment

  • Promotes a positive learning environment by establishing the underlying values of elementary school expectations and the diverse needs of both staff and students

  • Ensures a school-wide system for behavioral support and intervention is implemented

  • Supervises and evaluates all staff, including certified and classified, based on district guidelines

  • Actively supports the recruitment, selection and retention of staff who can ensure the vision of the school is realized, and implements incentives that ensure continued motivation.

  • Interprets Board of Education policies for students, staff, and the community and implements procedures to comply with all mandates

  • Manages the school's budget, including control of disbursements of all appropriated fields

  • Directs the preparation of a master schedule for the implementation of an educational program with optimal use of facilities and staff designed to meet the diverse needs of elementary school students

  • Supervises and participates in the preparation of a variety of reports, forms, and surveys, and in the maintenance of inventory and other records

  • Oversee the maintenance of standards concerning student discipline, health, safety, and general welfare

  • Reports to the appropriate source regarding the school's needs with respect to personnel, curriculum, equipment, and supplies

  • Directs or carries out a variety of administrative operational responsibilities, including general suspension of student transportation, utilization and maintenance of buildings and facilities, and cafeteria operations

  • Monitors and supports elementary teams and events

  • Promotes clubs, activities, and events designed for elementary school students

 

Collaboration

  • Establishes the underlying values and principles of elementary school to prepare students for success in middle school

  • Builds a school culture in which educators work collaboratively to increase student learning

  • Provides opportunities for collaboration unique to elementary school departmentalization, including vertical and horizontal cooperation

  • Reinforces expectations, roles, norms, and responsibilities for effective working teams

  • Matches leadership responsibilities to the talents of staff and teams

  • Mentors and coaches staff and student leaders

  • Builds on staff members’ skills and interests with leadership development activities to advance the capacity of all

  • Actively participates in Professional Learning Communities with the other elementary school administrators

 

Parent and Community Engagement

  • Maintains communications and serves as liaison with parents, parent groups, civic and community sources to achieve understanding and support for school programs and goals

  • Represents the school at community functions and groups

  • Provides parents and students with relevant information about school services

  • Actively recruits and utilizes parent and community volunteers as appropriate for the school’s instructional program

  • Collaborates with school and community groups to identify resources and solutions to increase achievement among all students

  • Models and uses proactive strategies to appreciate, respect, and promote tolerance for the cultures of the school and community to create an environment that supports high achievement levels for all students

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the U.S.

 

Verifications

  • Master’s Degree in Administration, Educational Leadership or related field

  • Ohio Professional Elementary Principal License

  • Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience

  • Previous experience as an assistant principal, coordinator or director, or any equivalent combination of experience that would provide the above noted knowledge, skill, and ability.

  • Broad knowledge of principles and practices of modern public school education and an ability to apply them to the needs of the school.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of current curriculum, instructional practice and trends, and public school administration and organization.

  • Ability to plan, organize, coordinate and administer a public elementary school, including teaching, support services, student activities, and school-community relations programs.

  • Capability to plan, supervise, and evaluate the work of professional and support staff.

  • Talent to utilize a wide variety of computer technology hardware and software applications.

  • Aptitude to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the general public.

  • Capacity to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and writing.

 

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES/DEMANDS

  • The position requires activities such as walking, standing, sitting, operating office and communication equipment, and lifting, moving, and carrying light equipment and supplies.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT  

The work generally involves only exposure to normal, everyday risks. However, some activities may require knowledge of intervention strategies when working with students. At times, the position may involve the use of de-escalation techniques with both students and adults. There is potential for exposure to blood or other body fluids. Before and after school meetings, evening and weekend events and other duties may be required.
